About this ebook

A close encounter with Grandma Mina's time-traveling carpet sends Scarlett and Sam to ancient Jerusalem, where some very important people need their help. The twins meet the prophet Nathan, the warrior Benayahu ben Yehoiada, and even King Solomon himself, the wisest ruler of all time. But Solomon has a big problem that even his wisdom can't solve. God wants him to build the Temple, but it can't be done without the mythical insect called the shamir. It's up to the twins to find the shamir—even if that means facing off against the king of the demons.

    Chapter 1

    Bugs and Butterflies

Hey! There’s one! Over by Grandma Mina’s dahlias! Sam called to Scarlett.

The twins were outside in the garden, working on a science project they’d signed up for online. They were taking part in a butterfly count sponsored by the science museum. Children all over the city had volunteered to spend two hours on this specific afternoon counting the different species of butterflies they could identify.

You could look for butterflies anywhere outside—in a yard, a park, or even a vacant lot. The challenge was to identify them. That way, entomologists—scientists who study insects—could compare the count with previous years and tell whether butterfly populations were increasing or decreasing.

In Hebrew class, Scarlett and Sam had been studying the idea of tikkun olam: caring for the world and the creatures who live in it. That’s why they were so eager to help with the butterfly count.

Where are you looking? I still can’t see it, Scarlett called to Sam. She had her cell phone out so she could take a picture of the butterfly as soon as she could get it in the frame.

It’s in there with the orange flowers, Sam said. It’s orange, too. That’s why it’s hard to see. Wait till it moves.

There! I see it now. Scarlett took the picture with her cell phone.

I got a good shot of its wings. That will make it easy to identify later.

Suddenly a scream came from inside the house.

    EEEEEEEEK!

That’s Grandma Mina! cried Scarlett. Something’s wrong! She and Sam ran for the house.

They found Grandma Mina in the dining room. Her hand shook as she pointed at the beautiful carpet hanging on the far wall. The carpet had been in Scarlett and Sam’s family for generations. It was one of the few things Grandma Mina and her family had been able to take with them when they fled Iran. Grandma Mina always said that the carpet protected them through all sorts of danger. She claimed that strands of magic had been woven into the carpet when it was made.

Grandma Mina! What’s the matter?! Scarlett shouted.

Bug! There’s a bug! Grandma Mina’s voice shook. Grandma Mina hated bugs. Scarlett and Sam couldn’t understand how someone who had faced so many real dangers—and who loved to garden—could be afraid of bugs. But it didn’t matter if it was a butterfly or a ladybug. If it belonged to the insect family, she wanted it gone!

    Where is it? Sam asked.

    There! On the carpet!

I’ll catch it and take it outside, said Sam. He didn’t like to kill anything: spiders, moths, even flies.

I’ll get a jar, said Scarlett, who felt the same way.

Scarlett grabbed an empty peanut butter jar and handed it to Sam. They walked slowly around the dining room table as they approached the carpet. They didn’t want to frighten the bug. If it took off, they might have to hunt for it all over the house. If it took off in Grandma Mina’s direction, they might have to hunt for her all over
