    About the Author

    Introduction

Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980 from the British colonial rule. It had a strong economy ranked the second largest economy in Southern Africa. The backbone of the economy was farming and other downstream agriculture-based industries. This agriculture-based economy was so strong that many referred to Zimbabwe as the breadbasket of Africa. Regarded as having some of the most fertile soils in the continent, the country enjoyed significant exports of wheat, tobacco, and maize. Other pillars of the economy used to be mining and manufacturing. The abundant natural resources include gold, diamonds, coal, iron ore, chromium ore, vanadium, asbestos, nickel, copper, lithium, tin, and platinum group metals.

Just after independence in 1980-1981, the economic data shows that the Zimbabwean economy grew by around 10%. Some of the memories of the once-thriving economy bring to mind the thriving beef industry supported by state of the art abattoirs, the export of top quality beef to the European Union, horticultural exports, a thriving iron and steel manufacturing industry, a functional railway network; just to mention a few.

However, the expansion of the Zimbabwean economy and the breadbasket status did not last. The economic structural adjustment programs did not produce intended results. Land reform policies and programs caused the country to be isolated through the imposition of economic sanctions. The country also partook in some regional military obligations that had negative effects on the economy. The economy subsequently progressively shrank significantly to desperate levels after the year 2000 leading to unemployment and poverty. Hyperinflation was experienced between 2003 and 2009. The abandoning of the Zimbabwe dollar in 2009 and the introduction of the multi-currency system led to economic stability and initiated signs of recovery.

The signs of recovery we have seen give us hope, but much more needs to be done to take Zimbabwe to its rightful position of prosperity. It is important to take time to reflect on the causes that led to our beloved country, blessed by the Almighty with peace-loving citizens, abundant resources, fertile soils, good weather etc. to experience protracted economic turmoil that has negatively affected the livelihoods of multitudes. Having abundant resources does not guarantee success and happiness in life. The human being is a spirit, has a soul and lives in a body; and the spiritual relationship with the Creator determines a lot of things. The spiritual perspective is therefore of much importance in this analysis than spending time on the blame game, pointing fingers.

Could the body of Christ have subverted this economic meltdown? Whilst it is of no importance crying over spilled milk, going forward - can the body of Christ do something that will cause Zimbabwe to be restored to abundant prosperity?  It is not the will of God for Zimbabwe to be in an economic quagmire, and for the time of productive generations to be wasted being preoccupied with economic challenges. We must rather be occupied with productivity.

So who is responsible for bringing about positive
