More about Wade

Thank you!

Thank you for your purchase of this book. I truly appreciate your patience and your perseverance I this hi-tech world. It motivates me when people are willing to invest the time to learn and improve. I also appreciate that you could have chosen any book and you picked this one! Thank you! I truly appreciate it. Now let’s get busy, you didn’t think I was going to suck up to you for the entire book, did you? We have stuff to learn! Pay attention!

Who is Wade?

Wade’s been in the tech industry for over 30 years, and over 25 doing wireless. He has worked on LMR (Land Mobile Radio) systems, 2-way radio, public safety, paging, trunked systems, cell systems, IMTS, and so much more.

He’s had jobs in the industry that range from RF engineer, microwave engineer, tower climber, technical sales, sales engineer, manager, field engineer, broadcast engineer, manager, vice president, consultant, solutions manager, sales, and the list goes on. Regardless of the title, improving the tech industry has been a priority.

Now we have so many wireless choices, but the number of players has dropped. In the USA, the carriers rule 80% of the industry while everyone else tries to find their space. Wi-Fi is the license-free alternative that helped other get creative and deploy in very small ways. As you can see the free space worked since most people rely on Wi-Fi to connect to the internet.

Many people say that public safety is the exception, and it was until FirstNet partnered with AT&T to build a public safety system for the strapped cities, counties, and states.

While wireless is awesome, we need fiber. It enables us to connect to that other great invention, the internet. The internet opens the world for all to learn. It can be a waste of time, so pay attention to how you use your time. It is hard sometimes, but we should be aware of how we spend our time.

Preface

Your one of the people that I talk to curious about what has been done. Most cities and businesses are trying to understand what has been done. We believe if we see a model then we know we can do it as well. That is the plan. How do we know what has been done? We research. That is why this book is valuable. It has done the research for you with references to the original documentation. I hope it finds you and you find solutions to your problems.

As you read this book, think about these questions:

1)  What did they do that was good? (What went right?)

2)  Why did you choose this technology for this solution?

3)  What went wrong?

4)  What did you think would be hard, but was easy?

5)  What did you think would be easy, but was hard?

6)  What did you have to give up to keep moving ahead?

7)  Did it pay off? Did you get the results you expected?

8)  Would you do it again?

9)  What did you like best?

10)  What did you like the least?

I’ll ask you again at the end of the book, but these questions are here to make you think about what the other cities did and if you can apply it. Maybe you have a similar problem that you can apply a similar solution to. Maybe you can find synergies between what they have done, and you need. It may help you get buy-in form the rest of the team members because they know it has been done. These case studies are real and help make us feel anything is possible.

Introduction:

When planning for the technology to be used for your smart city, you should consider several things. One is to see what has been done. What’s real and what’s not. How they did their deployment. Most of all, look at the lessons learned. It is a good idea to learn from others and their mistakes as well as what went right for them.

You deserve to have all your references in one place to help you build the library of case studies. This is a reference to help you consolidate all that information into one book.

What’s been done?

Who cares about the reason why? Everyone! The taxpayers, the residents, local businesses, and the constituents who reside in the city. They need to understand the greater good. It matters to them! The businesses in the city because they want to know what is in store for future business growth. And of course, all the people who run the city, the council members who are going to commit time and money out of their resources to make this happen. They need to believe in it. The goal of the first part of this book it to help them see what has been done, where the money may come from, and how to proceed. If they can see other cities have done something similar or if they had a greater vision, then you can help move in that direction.

I am in no way saying that you need to do what they have done, I merely want to provide examples to get the idea creation process started. Some of these things may seem out there, but the point is to be creative and to show you what’s important to other cities even though they may not be important to your city.

Good ideas often are not created by the mayor’s office or the council members. Rather the residents, local businesses, or even tourists have some of the best ideas. Those ideas may be to improve security or day to day living or
