    Chapter One

Chloe Logan looked around her empty four-bedroom house. She and Steve had spent their lives making it into a home for their nineteen-year-old daughter Sam, who was now away at college. Never in all of Chloe’s life had she ever imagined that her life would end up like this—empty and lost. Anything she’d decided to keep after the divorce or that had meant anything to her was packed inside her little SUV or in a storage unit. It wasn’t the right time to make a hasty decision about buying another house or even a condo this soon. She wasn’t ready to make that choice just yet and start to build a new life on her own—she needed to get away before she lost whom she really was. Chloe was determined to find the person she had been before she became the wife of Steve Logan, CPA and partner at Miller and Cooper.

Her family had always come first in her life. Now that the divorce was final and Sam was busy at college, she wanted to find a new purpose in life. Chloe wanted to reinvent herself in a positive way. She needed to start doing things for herself now.

They stood outside, staring at the house one last time. Mom, are you sure you want to do this? There’s an apartment in my building about to open up. I would really like it if you would think about this trip a little more. You can stay with me until that other apartment opens up. I know that Christina won’t mind if you stay with us for a little while.

Sam and Christina’s apartment was barely big enough for the two of them. Sam was a sweet girl, always thinking of everyone else’s needs beside herself. She was the one thing Chloe had done right in her life.

Turning around, Chloe faced her beautiful daughter Sam. People often commented that Sam was her clone, with the same long brown hair and dark brown eyes. She had to admit Sam did look like her at that age.

Chloe touched her daughter’s cheek affectionately. "I know that and I appreciate the offer, but I have to do this. I just need to take some time to figure out where I went wrong in my marriage. There’s so much that has happened to me all at once in such a short time that I haven’t been able to wrap my head around it. I know you don’t understand, but since your father and I have agreed to the divorce, I want to do this... I need to do this for myself. I need to see and experience things for myself. Leaving Washington and doing a little sightseeing has been something I have wanted to do for a while now. I want to be able to stop when I want to, drive through states and stay as many nights as I please. It will be an adventure of a lifetime for me."

I could go with you. We could be like Thelma and Louise.

As much as I’d like to spend that quality time with you, I think I need to take this time on my own to reinvent myself. There’ll be a time for you and I to go on a girl’s adventure once you get out of school. As for now, I’m going alone.

Her soon-to-be ex had never liked to travel. Steve’s biggest adventure was sitting on the couch each weekend and reading the travel section of the paper. Yes, he was a busy guy, especially during tax season, but even when he had his down time, he never wanted to go anywhere or do anything exciting. So she had started to find things to keep herself occupied. She joined the PTA committee and became a room parent in all of Sam’s classes in elementary. When Sam began to play soccer, in elementary school, she teasingly called Chloe the ‘soccer mom’ when she dropped her off in her mini van. Chloe didn’t care; she was just thankful to be a part of her daughter’s life as she grew up since Steve was busy working. She was a good mom. Too bad she wasn’t a better wife.

It sounds like fun. If you could just wait until this semester ends I can go with you—

    Nope.

    Your loss, Thelma.

    Sorry, Louise.

Chloe had to smile at her daughter’s attempt to get her to laugh. She hadn’t laughed much since she found out that Steve was seeing another woman. It was a blow to her gut knowing that there might have been something she could have done if she had known that their marriage was failing.

Sex was never an issue with Steve and her. Chloe had thought their sex life was as normal as anyone else’s. Their love might not have been hot and steamy like when they first started out, but she didn’t have any complaints. Maybe a little more spice in the bedroom now and then would have been okay, but Steve never insinuated that he was unhappy with her actions. Chloe liked to give blowjobs and Steve always made sure she came each time they had sex. Their life had become comfortable in the past years. Steve would go off to work while she would do her household duties. She liked to cook, she made sure the house was picked up, and she enjoyed reading on her down time. Never once was she bored or lacked anything in her life. She had been content—and maybe that was the problem. She was so content in her happy little bubble at home that she never saw this coming. She had become the boring housewife. Steve had lost interest in her boring clothes, boring long, brown hair and her need to no longer wear makeup.

No matter how much she’d begged and pleaded for him to reconsider the divorce, promising him she would change for the better, he had still left her for another woman. Nothing stung more in life than to have your spouse go running off to another woman’s arms because you weren’t a good enough wife. No matter how much she looked back and thought about all the things she could have changed to make things better in their marriage, nothing would have made a difference.

Now she had more time to think, more confidence in herself. She didn’t need to lower herself just to earn his love again. This was her chance to make a change. She was forty years old, for God’s sake. It was going to be hard enough to start all over again. She didn’t look forward to the dating world or allowing someone into her heart once more just to have it be broken. It would take time for her to trust again. But she never gave up hope that there was someone out there worth the time and effort.

She walked to the front door and looked around one last time. It saddened her to think of all the memories she’d made in what was once a happy home. Looking back, it was twenty years of smoke and mirrors.

    Never again.

Chloe walked back to where Sam stood by the cars. Honey, I would love to go with you any other time, but I have to do this on my own. This is me taking a giant leap into the real world. I have to learn to go places and do things for myself. I’d like to think that after nineteen years of raising you I did a pretty good job and now that your father has moved on, I need to spread my wings as well.

Dad’s an asshole. Sam muttered to herself under her breath.

Clearly Chloe heard her honesty and ignored the anger she still suffered to deal with between her and Steve. Sam was still angry at her father and there was nothing she could say or do to help ease her pain. Sam had endured enough on her own. It would take time for her and her father to mend their broken fences. Until then they would have to figure it out on their own.

Chloe grabbed her daughter by the shoulders and pulled her against her body, hugging her firmly. I can’t change the way you feel about him right now. I know the wounds are just as fresh for you as they are for me, but he is still your father and he loves you.

Sam wrapped her arms around Chloe’s waist, burying her face into her chest. It will take a while, Mom. He hurt you and me both. I still don’t understand how he could just stop loving his wife after twenty years of marriage and leave her for a younger woman.

It still stung to hear the ugly truth out loud.

Unfortunately it happens more than you think nowadays.

They walked each other out the front door and hugged. Getting into her car, Sam rolled the window down and stuck her face back out.

Please drive careful and I expect a phone call or text each and every night before you go to bed. And remember... I love you, Mom.

Chloe would never grow tired of hearing those words from her daughter. She loved her so much it hurt. She waved at Sam as the car pulled out of the driveway.

    I love you too, sweetheart.

She took one last look at the house. The new family would be moving in at the end of the month. She’d had the chance to meet the new owners and their two small children. This was
