The story

In the olden times, there lived a king whose daughters were all beautiful, but the youngest was so beautiful and she shines like the morning sun.

Close by the king's castle lay a great dark forest, and under an old lime-tree in the forest was a well, and when the day was very warm, the king's child went out into the forest and sat down by the side of the cool fountain, and when she was bored she took a golden ball, and threw it up on high and caught it, and this ball was her favorite plaything.

On one occasion the princess's golden calabash which she throws into the air often did not fall into her little hands, but on to the ground and then it rolled straight into the water.

The king's daughter followed it with her eyes, but it rolled itself on the grass and, into a river which was deep, so deep that the bottom could not be seen. The Calabash instead of floating went deep into the water.

At this she began to cry, and cried louder and louder, and could not be comforted.

The Princess usually uses the golden calabash to sing and dance with her friends. But, on this day, she decided to come alone to the playground.

And as the Princess lamented, she heard someone say to her, What is wrong with you, Princess that you cry so deep that even the stone-hearted would show pity.

She looked all around, up in the skies and first to the left and to the right side where she heard the voice. To her surprise, she saw a bird stretching forth its big, ugly wing and long beak from the water.

The Princess replied: I am weeping for my golden calash, which has fallen into the well.

Please stop crying. The bird answered, I am going to help you, but what will you offer me if I bring you the golden calabash?

I will ask my father, the king to give you whatever you ask, sweet bird, she said, I will give you everything that you desire, my Tiara, my pearl earrings, and even the golden bangles which I am wearing in my hand.

The bird answered, I don’t really care about your Tiara, your pearls earrings and gold bangles. All I care for is you. Your Love. He replied

if you will give me a portion of your heart and let me be your friend, and always sit with you, eat and drink with you – then I will go and get you your calabash. He replied

That is a done deal. she said, I promise.

The bird upon hearing the Princess’s promise, went to the riverside and put his beak deep into the waters. Minutes later, he came back holding the calabash with its long and ugly beak.

The bird handed the calabash to the Princess. The Princess was so happy that she has found her calabash again.

The Princess took the calabash from the bird and as he handed it to her, their eyes locked into each other. She quickly took her eyes away and began to run back home.

Why don't we go together as you promised my dear Princess.

The Princess refused to listen to the bird and ran as fast as she could back to the Palace.
