Chapter 1. In Which the Cat May Be Right
There once was a boa constrictor who lived with a colony of rats beneath a dense stand of blackberry bushes on the edge of a farm. This may seem odd to you, dear reader. It certainly seemed odd to the dogs and cats and horses and cows and chickens who lived with the humans in the neighborhood. It also seemed odd to the rabbits and squirrels and birds and foxes and coyotes and raccoons who lived in the woods beyond the blackberry bushes.
But the rats and the snake had helped to free each other from the boy who lived in the farmhouse. Now they were pleased to share each other’s company. The farmhouse cat often hunted the rats, but she feared the snake and would not come near the rats’ nest when the snake was present.
The snake’s name was Malachi, and his closest friend was a young rat named Eve. Eve sometimes remembered the cat’s parting words as they had fled the house. "He’s a snake, and snakes eat rats. That’s his nature.
