    Chapter 1

"Oh, God, would you look at that one?"

My eyes track to where Bre is looking to find yet another forty-something business man wearing a nice suit with a drink in his hand. He’s attractive, but he’s just another carbon copy of all the other business drones in this bar. I let out a laugh and shake my head.

He’s more your type than mine, I say.

She shrugs a shoulder and ogles him for a time longer. Bre has no shame and doesn’t even attempt to hide the fact that she’s checking him out. She reminds me of a lioness about to pounce on her prey.

I like older guys—sue me, she says. She stares at him a moment longer, then adds, But you have to admit, he sure does look like he knows his way around a girl’s body…

You think every guy in a suit knows his way around a girl’s body, I counter.

    In my experience, they do.

Your body must come with a roadmap.

    She shrugs.

I admit it—I’m pretty easy to please.

She gives me a coy smile and I can’t help but break into laughter with her. Bre’s the kind of girl who never seems to have any problems hooking up whenever she wants, and older guys have always seemed to be her thing.

    "Where my bitches at!"

The shout comes from a familiar voice and draws the attention of almost everyone around us. Bre and I look up to find Stephanie beaming as she glides toward us from the front of the bar. She’s wearing her black yoga pants and white tank top with a gray cardigan pulled around her shoulders. It’s basically the same uniform she wears out every Friday after she finishes teaching her yoga class. The grin on her face makes her look entirely too energetic for someone who just spent an hour inside a room as hot as an oven with thirty other people.

You’re so good at announcing how married you are, Bre says, as Stephanie sits down with us.

Hey, we’re all here to have a good time, aren’t we? Stephanie says, fixing Bre with a playful look. Sorry I’m late, it took me forever to find this place. What did I miss?

Us girls get together nearly every Friday night, but tonight we decided to switch things up and try out a new place that Bre had suggested. Stephanie and I are pretty sure she only wanted to go somewhere new because she’d already hooked up with all the regulars at our usual spot. Bre pretended like she didn’t see that comment in our group chat.

Oh, the usual, I say. You know, just Bre wanting to hit on every guy in the bar that looks old enough to have a teenager at home.

    Bre’s mouth gapes open.

You say it like it’s a bad thing! She gives my arm a playful nudge. Don’t forget, I like the young ones, too!

Steph fixes me with a knowing look and says, "Yes, don’t forget that Bre is an equal opportunity kind of girl."

Bre nods her head, sharply, taking absolutely no offense to the comment.

    That’s right.

Another round of laughter passes between the three of us. It feels good to be around the girls and finally be able to cut loose. I can use a few drinks and some laughter, after the week I’ve had.

Wasn’t your roommate supposed to join us? Steph asks.

I shrug a shoulder and roll my eyes.

She ended up having a work thing to go to, or something. Said she wasn’t sure if she could make it…

Steph frowns and shakes her head.

That girl always has something on, she says. She’s going to be single forever!

Bre’s eyes narrow as she shoots Steph a look.

Not all of us are as lucky in the romance department as you, Steph, she says, harshly.

The comment catches Steph and I both off guard—it seems a bit misplaced, coming from Bre, who doesn’t seem to have any problem hooking up with guys whenever she wants. Steph and Michael met in college and fell in love immediately. They’ve been together ever since. Maybe Bre is starting to wonder what that might be like.

Steph takes the comment in stride and doesn’t take it personally.

All I’m saying is that she’s never going to meet anyone if she doesn’t put herself out there.

Sofe can be weird like that, I add. I think she’s still trying to get over an ex.

The muted expression on Bre’s face remains a while longer as she looks between the two of us. I let out a relieved breath when she finally breaks into a smile.

We’ve all been there. She’ll meet a guy whenever she wants to, Bre says. She’s silent for a moment while considering something, then she looks at Steph and adds, "Well, maybe you haven’t been there, but the rest of us sure have!"

This elicits another round of laughter from all of us. I do wish Sofe were here to have fun with us, but she usually stays at home and keeps to herself more often than not. Mostly, she’s the best roommate a girl could ever ask for.

It doesn’t take long for us to fall into our usual conversations. I work in the marketing department of a pretty big New York company and Steph is convinced that I hold the secret to making her studio an international destination for celebrities and yogi gurus, so she usually spends as much time as possible picking my brain for marketing advice. Bre keeps herself busy by checking out every single guy that walks past us.

"So who are you going home with, tonight?" Bre leans in and asks me while eyeing some dude at the bar.

Men are the last thing on my mind.

No, thank you, I say, sarcastically.

Her brow crinkles and she gives me a look.

    Are you sick or something?

Or something, I say with a shrug. "It’s been a long week and I’m not really in the hooking up kind of mood. I just want to relax and take it easy."

My response only seems to confuse her even more.

Can’t you do that while you’re in bed with some hottie?

    I bark
