About this ebook

Haunted; inhabited or frequented by ghosts...

The House: There hadn’t been a house at the end of the street for decades, but suddenly, within days, there’s a house there, at the end of Damo’s street. Lot 666. How did it come to be built so fast? Who could have possibly done it? Or what...could have done it? And why did all those weird things happen when you went inside?

Sister Madly: Jessica Blakefield was a normal kid doing normal things when the dreams began. Dreams of someone calling her name...dreams of someone telling her to do things... But who was it making Jessica do the things she did and what did they want with her to the point of putting her in the hospital? And who is this person called Elizabeth?

23: Mel and Andrew Bates are two normal kids on holiday with their parents. They’re at a seaside hotel with a little old lady at the front desk and a weird big brute of a guy as the porter. When weird things go more than bump in the night they need to find their way back to the here and now, and not every other decade their room is sending them too. Room 23 is not normal, and they plan on finding out why.

He Who Opens This Book: There’s a weird house on Fourteenth Street that everyone says is haunted. But Mickey thinks it’s a load of rubbish, until his teacher takes his entire school class there as a lesson. The house is completely empty, except for a centuries old book that Mickey mysteriously trips over in the basement. What is the book about and why is it so hard to open? Mickey doesn’t know but he plans on finding out, the only problem is...the book wants him to.

The Haunting of Tiki Island: Danny, Mark and Elsa are on a lovely cruise with their parents to Tiki Island where they plan a week long holiday full of palm trees, tiki idols and a live volcano. But the workers disappear at midnight, and the volcano glows during the night and erupts, shaking the island and scaring the guests. Curious, Mark and Danny investigate the mysterious caves and floating tikis that seem to be haunting the island...

    THE HOUSE

Hey, Andy, you comin’ to my place this arvo? Damo yelled across the quad at lunchtime.

Yeah, I yelled back, and pitched my basketball easily through the hoop hanging on the side of the tech building. Who else is comin’? I grabbed the ball and bounced it.

Mark, Jesse, Tyler, a few others, Damo yelled before shoving half a sandwich into his mouth.

All right, I’ll meet you there— I was cut off by a glare from Mr Neworth who then proceeded to yell out across the quad.

No shouting across the quad! When he saw us laughing, he realised what he’d done and blushed. Yep, a grown man blushed. Adjusting his tie, he quickly walked away.

    *****

I had to go and get new cleats for soccer after school with Mum, so I didn’t turn up to Damo’s until five. I’m here, I yelled as I walked through the open garage into the backyard. There was a game of cricket going on and I took a seat on the porch to watch.

Jesse bowled the ball at Mark and got him out when the ball hit the stumps.

He’s out, Damo yelled, holding up his arms and rushing over to me. Wanna go, Andy?

No, thanks, I’ll just sit here and watch.

None of you will sit here and watch. You’ll break a window with the way you’re playing, so get down to the oval at the end of the road and be home by eight. Damo’s mother, Mrs Benton, stood on the porch behind me with her hands on her hips. I don’t want you breaking anything, so skedaddle.

We grabbed the wickets, bats and ball, and hightailed it down the street to the oval.

Hey, Damo, I thought that lot was empty? Jesse piped up from the middle of the pack as we all did a fast pace down the street.

    What lot? Damo looked around.

That lot, Jesse replied, somehow bringing us to a halt.

There were ten of us in total, and we all stopped in the middle of the road to look at the last lot on the street.

    Lot 666.

It’s at the end of a cul-de-sac, or court. The last house lot before the huge oval where we all played after school most days. The lot had been flat and empty for years, or at least it had looked that way. We’d investigated the site before. The whole place was weird. We’d found a few headstones off to the side, and nothing but a foundation where a house had once stood. A lot of overgrown ivy and weeds had control of the land the last time we’d passed it. That was…I counted on my fingers…last week.

Now, there were ruins. Rickety old ruins, like a house had been there and then collapsed in on itself and all that was left was the ruins of the ground floor. Ivy crawled across the walls and down the half-standing pillars on the front porch.

    But… Damo frowned.

Wasn’t that lot empty when we explored it? Tyler piped up.

We all stood there, transfixed by the now-built ruins.

    But it was… Damo added.

    Empty! Jesse finished.

    And now… Damo muttered.

    Built, Tony replied.

A bone cold chill ran down my spine. Guys, this is weird. I wiped my mouth. And creepy.

Cool! Damo cried. Let’s check it out. He ran towards the newly-existing ruins and was on the front porch before any of us could move.

    Damo!

    I don’t think—

    Not cool man!

This is way too weird for me…

Come on, guys, Damo called, waving us over. Come and check it out.

The rest of us glanced at each other. We were all wide-eyed and sweaty palmed.

I let out a whoosh of air. Okay, we move together as a group. No one wanders off on his own; we stick together. I got silent nods in return, and we slowly moved as one towards the path that led to the house.

Damo had disappeared and we couldn’t see him anymore. The lot was deep; we knew it reached far back to the woods behind it as it was the biggest plot of land on the street.

As one, we moved up the path towards the ruins. All the while our eyes darted around, looking for signs of life, besides Damo that was.

    Ca, ca, ca…

As one, we ducked, looking up toward the tree tops to see a lone crow flapping its way to another tree. It perched and balefully stared down at us while we fearfully stared back.

Oh, I breathed. Just a crow.

We relaxed, and rose as one.

Damo, I called. Where are you?

As one, we moved for the porch and I poked the first step with my toe.

    It creaked, but remained stable.

As one, we ascended the stairs and stopped on the porch in front of the one remaining door that hung crookedly by its hinges.

Damo, I yelled. A panicked clenching rose from the pit of
