Chapter 1: About the Authors

The authors served in Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Commandos

Both Angus and Pusser were born and schooled in the Midlands area of England, UK. They had never met, but as young boys keen for adventure, each one separately decided to join the UK’s Royal Marines in the mid-seventies. It would not be until the following decade that they were to meet and begin what has become a life-long friendship.

Both had a very keen interest in weapons, different types of warfare, field craft and tactics and so it was not surprising to find that they each took up the same Specialist Qualification as Platoon Weapons Instructors (PW), qualifying as PW First Class.

Throughout their time in the Royal Marines, Angus and Pusser were deployed on numerous occasions to global operations or crises to provide protection for those in need, winning their hearts and minds in the process. Both have seen active service in theatres as diverse as the Falklands, Northern Ireland, Belize, Cyprus, and Iraq; they fought in the Gulf War as well as undertaking other specialist duties working closely with Special Forces and providing protection duties for the Royal family.

During their twenty-two years of military service, Angus and Pusser made many other life-long friends or oppos. They are very proud to belong to the brotherhood of the Royal Marines and regard it as second-to-none. When you ask either what has enabled them most to succeed in life, their reply is that they were in the Royal Marines.

The Royal Marines has given us both an unbelievable sense of achievement and an ability to overcome adversity in any walk of life. That is the confidence the Royal Marines breeds and it is what makes us the men we are today.

Royal Marines see action in many theatres of operation across the world during their service

Having both completed their full twenty-two-year careers with the Royal Marines, a natural progression was for Angus and Pusser to move into the commercial security sector. Both have a large amount of experience in this field with a variety of expertise gained from having held positions as security project and safety managers.

In many of these appointments, both men were team leaders and instructors, planning and conducting training which led to live operations globally. Over time both have undertaken roles in armed personal protection as well as other related fieldwork across the world including maritime security operations working in an anti-piracy capacity.

Other experiences in which Angus and Pusser have been involved include investigations into drug smuggling, gun-running and theft on a large scale; their success in these operations helped avoid great cost to many companies, due to their skills, training and determination to gain a positive result.

As young men they swore an oath to Queen and country to uphold and protect against all enemies both foreign and domestic. To this day they have not forgotten that oath - It is as important today as it was the day it was taken. Having never forgotten the importance of that commitment even now, this book of security advice means a great deal to them. Angus and Pusser hope it will become an important part of you and your family’s life. If the advice in this book helps to prevent the injury or death of even just one person, then their hard work and committment to writing it has meant they have kept their oath. Chapter 2: Know Your Terrorist

The terrorist threat today is greater than it has ever been

The Problem

The USA is now living under a credible terrorist threat which is considered as the ‘new normal’. We need to face up to this fact and acknowledge that there is a problem. Atlas Security Advice believes that there are several basic factors that contribute to the problem:

Previous governments over a long period are guilty of under-funding emergency services in order to help cut national financial deficits. This in turn has led to fewer security services being able to police individual jurisdictions and keep you and your family safe.

The police can’t be ‘everywhere’, meaning that without specific sound intelligence, the terrorists can commit an attack at a location of their choice, virtually risk free.

Socially, the impact of an exponential increase in stress levels on housing, health, jobs and cultural lifestyles will continue to breed resentment in communities already under strain.

There is an increasing ‘millennial’ population unable or unwilling to integrate within society due to feeling alienated.

Greater numbers of disillusioned youngsters within disadvantaged communities are being targeted for radicalization.

There is greater experience from terrorist fighters returning from global war zones, which is being utilized to train newly radicalized recruits ‘at home’.

In summary, the problem is only going to increase going forward
