PREFACE
As a registered nurse in ICUs and ERs for fifteen years, I am often present when people are dying or very close to death. Over the years, I have seen some fantastic things that I cannot explain and I have no intention of trying to explain them. I only attempt to describe what I saw. But as is often the case whenever I tell these stories, some people try to come up with their own explanations, and that is always of interest to me. Some people will try to attach some religious meaning to the things that have happened while others lean more to the paranormal. Personally, I do not need to have an answer. I am content just to be privileged to have witnessed these events. I’d like to present these true stories, just as they happened, with no speculation as to what is what, and let the reader absorb them and come to their own conclusions. Almost all of these stories have several eye witnesses with only one exception, The Dutiful Nurse, but I included it anyway, because there is no apparent reason that can be attached to it. I believe it leaves the reader to speculate as to why it happened a little more so than do the other stories. All of these stories can be verified by the other employees that were present at the time. The names in the stories have been changed to protect the privacy of others involved, but the locations and events are all true.
When they are gathered all together, it seems like I have seen a lot of these things happen, but really, over the course of 15 years, I only have about 10 stories. So that’s an average of less than once a year. You never know when you go to work if that day will end up being a memorable day.
It’s interesting that since I started this project to write down all of these stories, my husband has taken every opportunity to ask other nurses about the things they have seen. So far, he has not found any. Recently, when his mother broke her hip, he stayed overnight with her in the hospital and asked each nurse who came into the room if they had any stories such as these. Surprisingly to me, no one has offered him a single story. Yet, if you were to walk into any hospital, anywhere, and ask if they had any strange happenings, there will always be someone who has worked there a long time who can tell you of their own special story.
For instance, at Biloxi Regional, almost anyone who works there knows who the girls
are. Supposedly, the ghostly images of two young girls have been seen at the bedside of dying patients on numerous occasions and they are commonly cited by guests who have never heard the story. I have never seen them, myself, but I have heard the giggling of young children a couple of times while working the night shift in the ICU. The first time I heard this, I was not aware of the story. I only knew that it was the middle of the night, long past visiting hours, and children were not allowed in the ICU anyway. Naturally, I had to investigate where the sound was coming from. When I found nothing, the charge nurse on duty that night filled me in on the story. On another occasion, I was sitting at the nurse’s station with another nurse when we heard the giggling. We looked at each other as if to say, Did you just hear that?
But before anyone spoke, a small, red, rubber ball, about 2 inches in diameter, came bouncing down the hallway. At the end of the hallway, about 20 feet from the nurses station, was a set of double doors, and there were no other openings between the nurse’s station and the closed doors. The doors were the type that
