Christianity or Islam? Decide Now - Pervaiz Salik
Chapter 1: The Core Beliefs of Christianity and Islam
(A) Core Beliefs
1. Belief in one God and worshipping Him alone.
Islam: Strictly Monotheistic and adhering to the above.
Christianity: Modified: Belief in the Trinity or Jesus (Peace on him) as equal/Son of God or Divine.
2. No Graven Images of God or Holy persons or objects are allowed.
Islam: Strictly as above.
Christianity: Modified: Images of Christ found in churches, films depicting Christ.
3. Prohibiting the taking of God's name in vain.
Both agree.
4. Remember the Sabbath Day/ Holy day.
Both agree, but differ in practice: very few Christians go to church or observe Sunday as a holy day.
Muslims have compulsory Friday prayers in mosques.
5. Honour your mother and father
Both agree.
6. Thou shall not kill
Both agree.
7. Thou shall not commit adultery
Both agree
8. Thou shall not steal
Both agree.
9. Thou shall not bear false witness
Both agree.
10. Thou shall not covet
Both agree.
(B) The Concept of Original Sin
Christians believe that the disobedience of Adam and Eve led to Original Sin for the whole of humanity.
Muslims do not believe in Original sin because God forgave Adam and Eve (although He punished them by expelling them from the Garden of Eden and sending them down to earth).
C) From the New Testament:
Belief in Jesus (Peace on him) as a messenger and prophet; salvation comes from his sacrifice, death, and resurrection.
Christianity: As above
Islam: Belief in Jesus (Peace on him) as a Mighty messenger and prophet only – no resurrection as such; salvation is by faith in Allah (God), His mercy, obedience to His will, and one's good deeds.
D) Other Common Beliefs:
Angels, Day of judgement, Revealed Books, prophets, fasting, charity, fair dealings and respect towards other human beings; righteousness and forgiveness.
E) Other Differences:
Muslims must pray five times a day, every day. Fasting during the holy month of Ramadan is compulsory for all Muslims. Muslims must give 2.5% of excess savings per year to the needy as charity. Muslims must perform the hajj to Mecca at least once in their lifetime (if they have the means to do so).
Chapter 2: Introduction to the Debate
(Note that throughout the book, PH stands for Peace on him.)
When it comes to religion, most people – even intelligent ones – lose all sense of proportion and logic, which are replaced by blind belief. No doubt belief is an important component, but it should not be the sole and only component.
I might believe my cup of tea is poisoned, but surely I cannot expect others to believe this too without any proof or evidence whatsoever. Religion is far too important a matter to get wrong: eternal torment and damnation are at stake. We must strive to get at the truth.
The two main religions of the world are Christianity and Islam. Both are parallel religions with many features in common, notably the Old Testament (the Torah) and the New Testament (the Bible, Gospel or Injeel). The main difference lies in the status of Jesus (PH).
The Muslims agree that Jesus (PH) was a mighty messenger and prophet, who performed many miracles (by God's help). After preaching, renewing and expanding
