Chapter 1

Adventurous! Is how Lisa would describe herself.

Impetuous! Was the word most frequently used by those closest.

Reckless! The word used by most others.

She wouldn't look before the leap, because to remove the risk was to remove the fun. Better the unknown than boredom! was what she said when challenged over another crazy stunt. Skydiving, bungee jumping, rock climbing, these were her preferred pastimes, and Lisa was always willing to accept a challenge... which was another reason for those closest to sigh and shake their heads.  The headline Breaking News, on the local television channels would provoke held breath and feelings of dread to spread through the family... with the thought What's she done now? filtering through their collective minds as one, almost like telepathy. But they all agreed on one point, Lisa meant no harm, at heart she was a good girl... she was just a little too gung-ho for their more delicate sensibilities.

And Lisa loved a cause! Usually a green cause. She protested about greenhouse gas emissions, nuclear power, oil pollution, deforestation! But her greatest passion was anything related to animals. Save the Whales, Anti-Vivisection and Animal Testing, the banning of live animals in circuses... and her most recent crusade... Zoos! Keeping animals in compounds and cages for the viewing pleasure of humans.

It had been a visit to her local zoo that had sparked her indignation. First she had seen a polar bear, the desolate creature rocking side to side, constant and rhythmical... like a metronome.

Why is he dancing like that daddy? a little girl with a pony tail and freckles had asked.

He's not dancing sweetie, the father replied before adding out of his daughters earshot, He's just so bored he's gone nuts... catatonic!

Lisa had taken the words in and digested, then she recalled documentaries she had watched on the television, mental patients, staring blankly ahead, sat with arms wrapped tightly around their knees... and rocking backward and forward.

We did this too him! She declared silently as her anger began to swell, we drove that poor creature completely mad... all so kids
