    Chapter 1

    ––––––––

My feet felt as if they were made of lead and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t seem to turn around and leave.

My mouth dropped open in surprise and a gasp escaped my lips, sure my face was turning fifty shades of crimson. I stammered out the only response that I could think of, Wh-what are you doing here?

This is my party. I could ask you the same question, he replied, raising his eyebrows while smiling with only one side of his mouth. He was flush with embarrassment, but much better at hiding it than I was.

Wait. Holy shit, Saviour! You two know each other?! the asshole yelled with a grin and a shake of his head. This night is fucking priceless, he laughed, before throwing his hands in the air and walking away.

Billionaire birthday party. Night out with the guys. How the hell did I not put this together?

I was speechless. I’d been hired as entertainment for Lincoln’s birthday without even knowing it. I felt humiliated after being dragged through his party and dropped at his feet like a piece of meat.

When he told me his friends were throwing him a birthday party it never occurred to me it would be that type of party. And although I knew he was rich, I didn’t think he was some playboy billionaire.

Come on, sweetheart, Lincoln said as he placed his hand on the small of my back, leading me out onto a charming, dimly lit patio.

This is so embarrassing, I admitted, lowering my head, tears swirling in my eyes. Lincoln grasped my chin with his pointer finger and thumb, lifting my head before he spoke.

Shhh, he whispered before kissing me slowly. I felt the anxiety and stress roll off my shoulders as he controlled me through his passionate embrace.

I can’t stay here, Linc, I whispered as he moved down my neck, sprinkling kisses in a trail towards my collarbone.

No, you can’t, he said as if he had been thinking the exact same thing. Which I had to admit, hurt my feelings.

Handing me a gold keycard, Lincoln instructed me to go to the presidential suite at the Ritz Carlton and wait for him. He explained that, because his friends had thrown the party on his behalf, he felt it would be rude to run out. So reluctantly, after a deep kiss goodbye I trudged back into the party.

I quickly scanned the room to find Julie, my best friend who had talked me into attending the party in the first place. Of course, at the time, she didn’t know it would be for the man I’d recently confessed to having feelings for. I spotted her standing on a table, a group of men crowded around, as she seductively danced in her black latex dress.

As if she’d been awaiting me, she instantly ended what was sure to become a striptease and walked towards me as I made my way to the exit.

So that’s him? she asked as we stood awkwardly at the entrance to the party.

"Yes. And he just saw me being brought to him as a gift, like I was a fucking object Julie!" I still couldn’t believe what had happened.

Simone, he knows what you do. I doubt he’s shocked, she reasoned in an attempt to make me feel better. Julie was in full-on work mode, even using my escort name. Lincoln may have known I was an escort, but she didn’t see the look on his face when he saw me.

I knew that it was all too real for him, just as it was for me. We both knew our time together was always scheduled and paid for in advance, but this put it all directly in our faces. It showed him that I was for sale—for him and anyone else that could afford me. For the first time since I began working as an escort six months ago, I felt really cheap.

Yeah, but it’s something more between us, Jules. I’ve tried to explain it to you. I know it doesn’t make sense, but I’m mortified. I can’t stay here. Call me tomorrow, maybe we can get lunch or something, I said as I moved closer towards the door.

I don’t know. There are some real high rollers in here, she said as she glanced around the room before continuing, I might find myself a new clinger and be booked for a couple of days, she smiled, referencing a term we used for dates that were completely infatuated with us, ready to spend obscene amounts of money for our time and entertainment.

We said our goodbyes before I made my way out of the party. Clinton, Lincoln’s personal driver, greeted me at the roundabout driveway in front of The Beverly Wilshire.

Miss Simone, he said as he opened the door to the Maybach he always drove Lincoln around in, I’ll take you to the Ritz, he explained as if he were there when Lincoln gave me my instructions.

At a loss for words, desperately needing some personal space, I simply nodded and settled into the back seat. As Clinton began driving I watched the lit up city blur before my eyes as the tears began to flow.

It wasn’t like I saw myself being an escort for the rest of my life, but I had to take care of my little sister Gracie, and trying to accomplish that with inconsistent modeling gigs and waitressing jobs was nearly impossible. Before I’d even gathered my thoughts the car was coming to a stop at the Ritz Carlton, which had become my regular rendezvous point for dates with Lincoln. Grabbing a tissue from the center console, I wiped my tears and forcefully put on a brave face to make it through the hotel lobby after thanking Clinton for the ride.

I walked briskly to the elevators, anxious to be alone again. Unable to close the elevator door fast enough, a couple stepped in to share the small space with me. They couldn’t keep their hands off each other as they pushed their way to the back of the elevator car after pushing the button that corresponded to their floor number.

I rode in silence as they kissed and fondled one another for the entire ride. I noticed they were both wearing wedding rings and wondered how different it was to be going to a room with your significant other as opposed to a client for the night, which was the only reason I’d ever been in the Ritz. Relieved that they were leaving, I forced a smile as the woman brushed past me, flashing an embarrassed grin. Inserting the golden keycard Lincoln had given me into the key slot, the elevator continued up to the top floor, which was only accessible through special authorization.

Entering the suite I began to feel a little relieved. Although it was a hotel room, the presidential suite was so large and well decorated that it felt like an entire apartment. The fact that I’d spent time there with Lincoln made it feel like his place, but as I walked around I was reminded that it was anything but.

There were no pictures or keepsakes, nothing that separated it from the many other hotel rooms I’d been put up in. Looking out the floor to ceiling windows, with an incredible view of the city, I felt my clutch purse vibrating and retrieved my phone to see Lincoln calling.

    Hi, I answered, still embarrassed.

Weren’t you supposed to call me? he asked sharply.

I just walked in the room, Lincoln, I said while rolling my eyes.

Just relax, sweetheart, he said as if he could hear the tension in my voice. Make yourself a drink from the bar. I’ll be there in an hour, he assured me before ending the call.

Another bonus to the suite was a full bar, unlike the typical minibars that accompanied smaller rooms. Taking Lincoln’s advice, I made a Gin and tonic before slipping out of my dress and into the king size bed.

After taking a few deep breaths, I turned on the television in an attempt to drown out my thoughts, but it was useless. My mind was racing. How would this make Lincoln feel? I naively hoped it wouldn’t change the way he felt about me, but deep down I knew it would. I was conflicted as I anxiously awaited his arrival, but also dreaded discussing the night’s events.

I wanted to explain everything to him, lay it all out on the table so that he knew I wasn’t just a typical escort, and my feelings for him were genuine. But how would he react? I knew he would bail once he knew the truth about me. A young girl running from her abusive, sorry excuse for a father, forced to take care of her teenage sister. I was sure that me raising Gracie would be too much for him to accept and the thought of him wanting to abandon me as my
