And Kaleo just sits back and takes it all in.

    Chapter One

    Memphis, Tennessee

Ladies and Gentlemen, the award presentation we’ve all been waiting for…. The Master of Ceremonies paused and fumbled with a large ivory colored envelope sealed with the Romantic Review Awards emblem. Gasping as if the winner were a surprise, he stared into the camera and grinned widely before finishing. "On behalf of the Romantic Review Awards committee and fans all over the world, it is my pleasure to award Madison Lee, Best Romance Author of the Year."

The crowd cheered. Madison’s fellow authors and publishers scrambled to their feet with a standing ovation. They supported her win like they never expected her to secure such an outstanding commendation, even after Madison’s books had sold millions of copies. The sales alone more than warranted the win.

Kristen stared at the television as her sister, Madison, emerged from the crowd, taking a leisurely stroll toward the front of the room as a spotlight followed her. She stopped long enough to embrace her publisher in her pursuit of the microphone.

Forever in touch with her sixth senses, Kristen was proud of her sister, but she also feared what kind of speech Madison might deliver. As of late, Kristen had been credited for Madison’s book ideas. Considering the genre in which Madison chose to write, Kristen didn’t necessarily revel in the glory.

Please, God, don’t let her mention my name, Kristen prayed aloud as Madison accepted a large platinum book, an author’s version of an actor’s cherished Oscar trophy. Meanwhile, large white projector screens dropped behind the podium. Colorful book cover images faded in and out as one bestselling title after another was displayed.

Madison tapped the microphone. I’ve always wanted to do that.

Kristen bowed her head. Thank goodness she wasn’t seated in the crowd. Her sister would’ve detected her poor start and stumbled on from there. Instead, Madison giggled like a school girl. The spectators joined in her laughter. A few attendees clapped wildly, acting like Madison had just uttered a favored line from a novel.

Madison cleared her throat. I can’t tell you how excited I am to be here tonight or explain how much I appreciate the opportunity to stand before you and collect the most coveted award in romance.

The camera veered away from Madison and captured Madison’s publisher bobbing her head in a nod of approval. Her authors had raked in nominations all night long, but the ultimate win, the one every publisher in the house wanted for their authors, was secured by Madison. Kristen could only imagine what kind of advances her sister would receive in the future.

Madison took a deep breath, made a show out of searching the sold-out crowd at Radio City Music Hall and finally began her speech. I feel like a supernatural creature living in one of my romance novels.

Fans and fellow industry professionals roared with cheers again. The Master of Ceremonies checked his watch. Kristen glanced at her clock. It was almost ten and if Madison didn’t hurry up with her spiel, the scheduled program would boot the Romance Reviews Awards right in the middle of Madison’s five minutes of fame.

The Master of Ceremonies whispered something in her ear while those in the crowd returned to their seats. I’ve been warned we have less than a minute so here goes—I want to thank my publisher, Martha McNew. She directed her conversation to her publisher and friend. "Martha, you believed in me when no one else did. You saw something in my vampires that other publishers and many agents refused to acknowledge. With a darker than acceptable plot, A Sexual Revolution shouldn’t have appealed to the masses, but gained support from your marketing efforts. I can’t thank you enough. Since we’re out of time, I’ll rush through a list of names."

Kristen stuffed a seedless grape between her lips, half-listening. Madison would inevitably be interrupted as they joined the scheduled program.

I can’t forget Scott Collinsworth, Mark and Melinda Thompson….

A network intervention would be the only way to stop Madison’s endless notes of gratitude. Kristen sighed. She’d tried to warn Madison before she left for New York. Madison had a tendency to ramble. Kristen had gently explained if she won an award, keeping her acceptance speech short and sweet would ensure she wasn’t interrupted.

Oh, well, Kristen muttered to herself. I led the horse to water, but she refused to drink. She brought her wine glass to her lips and took a gulp.

Finally, I want to thank my sister, Kristen.

Kristen spewed the red liquid as soon as she heard her name. She reached for a napkin and swiped at her shirt, glancing at the television.

Don’t you do it, she said, talking to the screen, but a look of sheer determination washed across her sister’s face.

Madison stared directly into the camera. Kristen, I know you’re at home watching tonight, and the evening wouldn’t end on a positive note if I didn’t tell you how much I appreciated you. Without you, I wouldn’t have been able to create realistic sex scenes with numerous men, many of whom my characters meet for one-night stands. I wouldn’t have known about ménage à trois or any of this bondage stuff if you hadn’t first enlightened me with your stories and your vast experiences.

Kristen stuffed another seedless fruit in her mouth, chewing rapidly. Oh, she was pissed. She grabbed a nearby bottle of water to wash down the nickel-size object and thought of retribution. She wasn’t above short-sheeting Madison’s bed or making her walk home from the airport.

How dare Madison make her out as the go-to source for writing sex scenes!

If you hadn’t been open about your life and lovers, my ideas wouldn’t have materialized. You’re my best friend, my proofreader and a woman who can definitely work her way around a man’s anatomy. I trust your instincts, your advice and your wisdom. Every author should be as fortunate as I am to have an ongoing source of sexual information right at their fingertips. I wish you could’ve been here. She raised her trophy high above her head. This award is all because of you. We both know I wouldn’t be standing here tonight without you first lying on your back and taking it like a champ! Your experience amazes me and because of you, my stories were created!

    Are you serious?

Those in the audience rose to their feet. Laughter rang out in the room at Kristen’s expense. If she’d been there, her sister wouldn’t have been standing period! She would’ve decked her!

Seething, Kristen glared at the television. Music played in the background. Madison returned to her chair as the Master of Ceremonies hurriedly told everyone goodnight. Seconds later the season premiere of yet another reality television show began.

Closing her eyes, Kristen counted to ten, assuming it would only take a second for her partner, Detective William Melrose, to give her a ring. Moments later, she released a huge sigh of relief. Maybe no one in Memphis cared about the romance world. She could only hope Memphis natives, particularly those she worked alongside, were too busy to watch yet another awards show.

Freak’n A! She planned to give her sister a royal piece of her mind as soon as she flew home. Just who did Madison think she was, making her out as the slut of the South?

Lightheaded, Kristen grabbed a nearby sofa cushion and held the large square to her chest, taking deep breaths. She clung to the firm object cursing the anxiety rolling over her. Feeling as if she were going to faint, she stretched out on the couch and closed her eyes.

There, she mused. Now she’d found solitude, an uninhabited place of total seclusion where she was free to be anyone she wanted. Breathe in and out. There was no need to worry about the things she could not change. In and out. Besides, her colleagues and friends knew the truth. The stories she shared with Madison weren’t a replay of her life in the fast lane. In fact, they were just the opposite.

Her cell phone hummed with Rocky Top, the designated tune she’d programmed for William since he had always been such a huge University of Tennessee football fan. She contemplated avoiding him. Then again, the teasing would come either tonight or tomorrow.

Might as well let him have his fun, she grumbled, picking up the handheld device.

She clicked receive and heard a lot of scrambling in the background. Hello? William? Is that you?

Yeah, Kristen, he rasped. Hang on, I’m…I’m sort of in a pinch here. Fuck! Static filled the line.

    William? Are you there?

    The line went dead.

Super. William was up to his usual pranks. After quite possibly the most embarrassing night of her life, Kristen wasn’t up for William’s jokes.

Seconds later, her cell rang with a standard ringtone. Guessing William might have called her from another phone due to a bad connection, she quickly punched the green button.

Hello? Laughter filled the line, alerting her to the obvious.
