Chapter 1
Jake opened his locker and yawned and cursed himself for staying up too late playing online games. He had planned to get some sleep, but some player on the other team told him that he just got lucky and wanted a rematch. Jake couldn't stop until he had completely crushed the taunting player until he raged quit. By then it was almost morning so he only got 3 hours of sleep.
His locker looked the same as always crammed full of his worn-out textbooks, notebooks with all of his messy handwriting and random papers that he didn’t bother to put away. Shuffling through he took out his English notebook and a pen. Closing his locker Jake shuffled to his class, head down, with his eyelids half closed. Jake didn't even notice the big steps of his friend Tom coming directly behind him until it was too late. Whomp!
How’s it going Jake?
Jake winced in pain, it was Tom, Jake's best friend since 3rd grade. Tom was 6 foot five and packed with muscles with his short wavy sandy brown hair and blue eyes. He was part of the football team and one of the most popular guys in school. Compared to Jake they were polar opposites. Jake was short and scrawny with black ruffled hair and green eyes. Jake didn’t have many friends and prefer being alone most of the time.
Oh nothing much Tom just a little sleepy
Ha sleepy, more like sleep walking. I saw you almost run into five people and that wall. What did you do this time? Watching too many movies or…
He leaned in close and gave Jake a sly look. did you have a girl over?
Whaa, No I didn’t. I was just playing games and lost track of time
Tom gave Jake a worried look
again? look Jake you really need to get more sleep the circles under your eyes almost look like black holes’ man, I'm not joking
Hey, hey I'll be fine Tom. It not like have any tests today so I should be fine.
Okay then, well I’ll see you at lunch then.
’ Tom slapped Jake on the back again and strolled away to his first period class. Jake yawned again and shuffled into his English class. Struggling to stay awake he thought to himself that today was going to be a long day.
….
The lunch bell rang through the empty halls, it was a signal to open the floodgates. Instantly the halls became clogged with students packed to the brim like a sardine’s tin. It was like a river trying to go two ways at the same time. The current pushing and pulling and at some places a complete standstill. Students going every which way ruthlessly cutting in front of each other to get where they are going.
Their locker, other classrooms to talk to teachers and the lunchroom. The lunchroom, the biggest room in the entire high school yet it had the least amount of space. The principal Mr. Buckets promised that the lunchroom could hold and feed every student in the school. Jake knew that was a lie as he pushed his way down the hall trying not to trampled by the other students. In recent years, the high school had been calling budget cuts on the lunch program. To improvised they bought massive amounts of cheap frozen food. Jake shuddered, it was nasty. The only good item where the chicken strips. But they disappeared in seconds. Everything else was garbage that was exactly what it was garbage. No one touched the the stuff so it ended up in the garbage. Only the desperate kids would try to eat those lunches. It was so bad half of them had to go to the nurse's office.
Jake felt his stomach rumble and sighed he wasn’t getting any food today. He glanced around the jammed pack lunchroom. Every table was full of high schoolers laughing
