I have always used writing as an outlet. I like to prepare myself for different situations and writing helps me think through what to say and do. Interestingly enough, I was so shy and afraid of people I never shared my writing with people I know in real life. My writing has been and remains something that I only share online. One day, I hope to have the courage to integrate my two lives.

    Chapter 1

    Nicole Lawson

So, the first date wasn’t a total disaster. My *first* kiss still makes me blush. It felt so perfect, so right. Lately I’ve gotten to piano lessons early just so I can have a few minutes to see him and talk to him face-to-face. We talk on the phone some nights, some days we just text. I just feel good about Brian. Could it be? Could he be my *first* love?

    Brian Summers

The first date, wow… I really like Nicole, but the thing with her parents was a little bit extreme. Good kiss though. I can’t believe Ashley was there. Who is she screwing now?

    Anya Dorn

I like hanging out with Sejla. She’s cool. It’s really nice to have a friend. Sometimes we hang out with Riley from dance class. Riley is a TRIP! He’s always making us laugh and telling us the latest gossip. Rumor has it that Yasmin and Darius have been getting close. I wonder if it’s true. David has not been himself… Anyway! I won’t say I love it here, but having some friends makes it a heck of a lot easier.

Riley lightly punched Anya in the arm as they walked down the hall together. You know I did! He exclaimed.

Anya burst into laughter. I cannot believe you did that, Riley!

Someone had to tell homegirl that she was starting to look like Oscar the Grouch with them ‘brows!

Anya snorted. Still, you didn’t have to say it in front of her boyfriend.

Psssh, Riley whistled through his teeth. She wouldn’t have one much longer after her eyebrows covered that big forehead of hers!

Anya stopped to wipe her eyes from laughing so hard. Are you going to audition for the dance company?

I don’t know, are you? Anya could tell that Riley really wanted to join, but probably felt a little intimidated being one of the few boys that actually enrolled in dance.

I might, maybe you, Sejla, and I could be in the dance company together. The step-parent insists that I get involved in one after-school activity.

Riley’s eyes lit up. Then let’s do the damn thing!

    When are try-outs again?

Eh, next week some time I think. Do you have an audition piece?

An audition piece? Anya repeated. Is it really that serious?

Yes! Riley nodded his head for emphasis.

Oh, then, I don’t, Anya shrugged her shoulders.

Ok, talk Sejla into it and we’ll all get together and work on it. I’ve got some moves I can teach you.

Okay, Anya nodded starting to feel excited.

See you in dance, chica, Riley waved as he went into his next class.

Anya continued down the hall towards her English class. On the way, she passed David and Yasmin talking in the hall. Neither were smiling and things seemed pretty tense. Anya tried to eavesdrop, but the most she understood were their facial expressions. Yasmin looked upset and David looked angry.

Someone must’ve been with Mr. Lewis again. Anya mused to herself.

When she arrived in Mrs. Ashcraft’s class, Anya took her usual seat and waited for David to pop into the classroom. He barely got in before the tardy bell and loudly slammed his things onto the desk.

    You ok? Anya whispered.

    David nodded.

If you ever need to talk to someone, I can be a great friend, Anya suggested. David half-smiled.

    Thanks Dr. Dorn.

She turned to the front of the classroom, hoping David would talk to her. She would love to know what was going on.

    ~*~

I’m sorry, David apologized softly into Yasmin’s ear. I overreacted.

Me too, David. I should have called, Yasmin said as she nuzzled her nose into David’s warm neck. They were at David’s home, sitting on the couch in the basement family room area.

David wrapped his arms around Yasmin and pulled her even closer to him. She was already practically sitting in his lap, but still he wanted her closer. He felt her relax in his embrace. Memories of the summer and how much time they spent together wafted through his mind.

The summer had been perfect. They usually met up after they woke up and went to the community recreation center to work out. By that time, they were hungry. Being teenagers with limited income, they ate at one another’s homes. Occasionally, they would eat out for lunch at the food court in the mall. They saw all the must-see summer movies. They had long talks, even longer make-out sessions. Then, when his family invited Yasmin to the beach, everything got even better. They didn’t stay in the same room, of course, but just being able to spend so much time together made up for it. They walked on the beach, played in the pool, explored the beach town, watched the sunset every evening together…

It was the best summer of my life. David thought to himself.

"David, we can’t do our work if
