    CHAPTER 1

‘Shh, shh, Sarah, what is it?’ Daniel whispered, keeping his voice low, trying not to wake Megan or Bea.

Sarah moaned, her face screwed up as if in agony. Daniel’s heart sped up as he felt a surge of love and worry.

He shook her arm. ‘Sarah! Sarah! You’re having a nightmare. Come back to me!’

    ***

Dark mists swirled around Sarah as she was buffeted by a crazy wind. There was something beyond the mists, something she couldn’t see.

    What was out there?

Her heart thudded and she felt her whole body go hot. It felt like she was burning as the cold wind hit her skin. She strained her eyes but it was so dark, too dark … she needed to see … what was it?

A horrible feeling grew within her, as if from her bones, a darkness … she felt it ripple around her body as she struggled against it, each ripple bringing a shock of incredible pain. Her body contorted, and she struggled.

‘Shh, it’s over, you’re with me,’ Daniel whispered.

‘It felt so real!’ Sarah whispered back.

    ‘Was it like last time?’

Sarah nodded. ‘Exactly the same. It’s like I’m being possessed. It’s horrible – my heart still feels all heavy and weird.’

‘It’s ok, I’m here, none of that is happening now. Do you think … remember before … before you were a vampire … when Sebastian tried to possess you?

It might be a posttraumatic stress reaction…’ Daniel said.

‘I guess … but it doesn’t feel like it. Not that I’m an expert or anything. It feels more like a warning. Like the premonition dreams I used to have. You don’t think someone might try to bring Sebastian back?’

‘No-one knows where he is, and there’s no way they could…’ Daniel left the sentence hanging, thinking through whether this was true. But he shook his head, no, it wasn’t possible. ‘Don’t worry, even if someone
