    Chapter 1

Flora Hurley used all the strength a meagre breakfast had infused in her body to turn the stiff steering wheel of her car and prayed for the old vehicle to make it up the escalating road ahead. The wheel was rigid because her front tires were under-inflated and she had put off changing them for too long. Mind you it was not that she was a negligent driver or even an unorganised young woman! Oh dear no! Many who knew Flora, or Flo as they called her, would tell you it would be hard to find a more diligent young person. However, no amount of diligence had helped her reach the amount of savings she needed to get the car fixed. This month had asked for a tough choice to be made; change her tires or repair a set of expensive strings from her musical equipment. She was a musician and her career always went first, so the choice to make had seemed obvious. She had figured out that investing her salary to repair her equipment would help her perform better and that would increase the tips she got from the musical joints, and she could then use that money to bring the car to a mechanician. It had seemed like a good decision at the time but now that she was struggling with the car and running late for work she wasn’t as sure as before of the wisdom of her decision.

The car was a beat up 94’ machine she had bought for a decent amount three years ago but which had asked for more reparation than she had expected. To be fair it had been her first time buying a car and when she bought it she didn’t know a single thing about checking a vehicle nor did she have anyone to advise her, so she had happily settled on buying this one. The gear stick often caught and made you move forward when you wanted to go in reverse and she frequently felt like she was pulling a stubborn animal by its horns. But it was all she could afford and, however capricious it was, it did help her get from point A to point B... As long as point A and point B were not too far from each other and that the road between them was mainly flat.

Flora prayed hard as the car moved up the road with a deep growl. She kept a hand on the handbrake and gripped the wheel tightly as the car slowly but surely made its way up the steep road. Her forehead was damp as the car finally reached the top of the mount and a smile of relief broke on her face. Thank God, she started muttering but she soon realised that something was wrong. The car was moving weirdly, as if set on vibration mode. She was used to all sorts of weirdness from the old vehicle but this was new. As if to confirm that this was nothing usual, the old piece of metal gave a few short jumps before stopping briskly with a sudden bursting sound. Flora grimaced in reaction, unaccustomed to the loud noise. She blinked in distress as she watched the heavy smoke coming out of the bonnet. The understanding that her old car was really dead this time brutally dawned on her.

It was hard to tell given how it was going now but this day had actually started marvellously: She had gone to an audition which had resulted in her being selected to replace the pianist of a symphony orchestra downtown for three weeks till the permanent pianist came back. The cheque would be big enough to cover her rent and expenses
