The Waiting Room is a chilling short story from Author Jonathan Kent. With no knowledge of how he got there, all Gary can do is follow the crowd and shuffle forward towards his allocated serving hatch. The only person that is paying him any attention is an annoying Scottish man in the next queue. A man that seems to know more than he is letting on.
As fragments of memory return, he is swept along by the crowd until he finds himself in his allocated Waiting Room to face the shocking revelations that follow.

The line shuffled forward as presumably another 'customer' was served. In all, Gary could make out twelve serving hatches; all but one manned by middle aged women. He estimated there were thirty or maybe thirty five people ahead of him in the queue, but even so, he could still see that his particular hatch (number 6) was manned by a balding bespectacled male.
Each of the hatches had an ancient looking metallic grill that the servers hid behind. Surrounding these was a resplendent dark wood counter that rose to ceiling height. It reminded Gary of the old style bank counters seen in Black and White movies. Something with Cary Grant or James Stewart, where the actors always seemed to talk too loud and too fast.
The serving hatches were at the end of a long hall with large arch shaped windows running down each side. There was no light coming in, so he guessed it must be dark outside. All the hatches had a similar queue snaking away from them down the length of the hall. Each queue was separated by a length of gold rope looped through brass stands every eight to ten feet. It was the kind of roped barrier you would find at the entrance to VIP lounges.
Or funeral parlours.
To Gary it felt like a railway station, but he couldn't hear any trains running and he couldn't remember buying any train ticket. Come to think of it, he couldn't remember very much at all. His name was Gary, he knew that. Gary Simpson. Ok, not a bad start. But where was he? He looked around. On either side of him were long shuffling queues filled with silent people.
