Preface
Or Patterson’s Perspective
2062
I thought when I was chosen to join the First Expedition to Mars, I was in heaven. My life was a wreck on Earth. After being released from a ten-year prison sentence due to false murder charges, I found myself unable to find work. It seemed that any sort of balanced life in the current worldwide depression would be impossible. Now that I am out, I am beginning to realize that we were kept extremely ignorant while in prison. So shortly after my release, when Our Leaders said Mars had been terraformed and now possessed a viable atmosphere for human beings, my eyes shined at the possibilities. The crossbreed recruiters explained to me and over a thousand others in similar situations as myself that upon relocation, we would all receive our own mansions and dream lives of plenty.
Considering, since my release from prison, I had not been able to find my young wife, Daliah, nor my sister, Maxi, nor my genetic twin brother, Jot, of whom I was led to believe were all dead, I jumped at the opportunity. With the loss of my family and in my downtrodden state of being, I had nothing to lose. Even though all the people of the First Expedition would not be able to keep contact with those on Earth and would lose everyone from their pasts, I was all for it because I had nobody to lose anyway.
The problem was that just before boarding the gigantic flying saucer in route to Mars, my beloved Daliah called out to me from behind the fence that separated the onlookers from the expediters. I was floored to see the angel that I loved more than anything in the world. With love pouring from my heart, I ran toward my woman, but to my utter dismay, officers lassoed me by the neck, forcing me into submission, and proceeded to paralyze my body with what I presume to be a light holder.
After all that, I was victim to a lot of weird crap. During my paralysis, I must have either blacked out or more likely I was drugged into unconsciousness. I have no recollection of that time period. I simply
