About this ebook
--New York Times
"From the team that touched off the irreverent humor trend Go the F**k to Sleep, author Adam Mansbach and illustrator Ricardo Cortes, comes a new kid-friendly version of their instant comic classic. Seriously, Just Go to Sleep brings children in on the joke, helping them understand their own tactics and why their parents just want them to go . . . to sleep."
--Publishers Weekly
Critical success for the original Go the F*** to Sleep, a #1 best seller at: New York Times, Amazon.com, Wall Street Journal, Publishers Weekly, and many more!
Seriously, Just Go to Sleep is the G-rated, traditional-sized, children's version of the book every parent has been talking about. Go the F*** to Sleep, the picture book for adults, became a cultural sensation by striking a universal chord for parents. Now, Adam Mansbach and Ricardo Cortés reunite with Seriously, Just Go to Sleep, inviting the children themselves in on the joke. As parents know, kids are well aware of how difficult they can be at bedtime. With Cortés's updated illustrations (including a cameo appearance by Samuel L. Jackson, who narrated the audio book version of Go the F*** to Sleep) and Mansbach's new child-appropriate narrative, the book allows kids to recognize their tactics, giggle at their own mischievousness, and empathize with their parents' struggles--a perspective most children's books don't capture. Most importantly, it provides a common ground for children and their parents to talk about one of the most stressful aspects of parenting.
Seriously, Just Go to Sleep came to be when Mansbach read a highly censored rendition of the original book to his three-year-old daughter, and she recognized herself as the culprit and was delighted. "We were getting a lot of feedback from parents, saying that their kids loved the book--read in an altered form--because they recognized themselves in the character of the mischievous kid who's winning the bedtime battle, and thought it was hilarious. So we figured we’d do a companion volume that lets kids in on the fun."

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is a cute children's book which would be a perfect bedside companion for your child's room. I will be passing this on to my grandchild.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The original book was fantastic for children who did not fully understand the words being said to them. This cleaned up version has the same feel but is appropriate for children who now repeat the words their parents say. The children recognize the situation presented in the story, and are entertained, although maybe not likely to sleep after reading it.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This is a fun book that children will enjoy because of the fun illustrations and the repetitive 'go to sleep' theme. The good news is that it is also fun for parents who will laugh at the joke that all parents share about getting their child to go to sleep.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Sweet enough, my kids (ages 4-18) like it. It's not really that brilliant, though, and I doubt it would get much attention if not for the success of the earlier adult volume. This one is just not that creative, inventive, unusual, or clear. No real reason not to have it, but not what I'd recommend spending money on among children's lit if your budget is limited; there are much more classic and valuable volumes for young children.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I love good children books. Ever since I read an unparliamentary version of this book on the internet, I chuckled at the real unadulterated frustration that came from its words. Yes, I've been there, too. Now I got my own copy of it thanks to Early Reviewers, and the even though what I received is a perfectly clean and politically correct copy, I will always secretly remember what it originally said and chuckle to myself every time I read it.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This is a cute book, as many know it is a censored version of "Go the **** to sleep." If you want a quiet chuckle to yourself while reading your child's bedtime story, then this would be a good book for you to read. As a stand alone-book, the pictures are very pretty and interesting, but the text was not particularly funny to me or my kids. That being said, it's an excellent companion book to the more ribald version.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I read this immediately to my kids within minutes of opening the package it came inside of. They enjoyed it...especially my 7 year old who totally got the joke. My youngest just smiled and admired the pictures. For a kid picture book, it should show the child sneaking around or somtething. Instead the book "looks" like a regular children's book, but the words are in juxtaposition. As a parent, I loved it. As a parent who reads to his kids every night, I can totally see what the art and poetry are trying to depict...and they succeed as parody of bedtime books everywhere. This book is recommended...especially if you don't want the "F*ck" edition sitting on your bookshelf where it could land in the hands of budding readers. I go this book as a part of the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I was interested to see how this book compared to the hype of the orginal. Although Im not a parent, I enjoyed reading the book and will share it with friends and kids in my life. The words flow well and the artwork is beautiful.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5My son doesn't have trouble going to sleep, so I can't testify to Seriously, Just Go to Sleep's practical efficacy, but he did enjoy it and we will be keeping it in the bedtime rotation.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I read this book with my younger grandchildren (the older ones - age 6 - 12 pronounced it a baby book and said they had seen the original version and that was better - LOL).I don't disagree with them, but as an adult it would be only natural to prefer the adult version of the book - it sparkled! My 5 and under crowd really liked this book. They liked the musicality of the poetry. They liked the illustrations. At the end of it, we had to start over - twice. I am not sure it will take the place of perennial favourites such as Kevin Henkes or Robert Munsch, but I think it will receive enough requests to keep it from gathering dust.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I asked for help on this review. My 8 year old daughter tells me she gets the book but it is boring because it keeps repeating itself. My 4 year old son liked some of the pictures but was not fond of the story. The original book had such humor for any parent but it was lost here and I am not sure it has been replaced with something to make this book really special. That being said the pages are big and colourful which is wonderful (even if I found the people/ kids a little freaky looking).
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A humorous book in the style of a children's picture book wherin the father reading to his child just wants to get to sit on the couch with his wife and watch a movie. Every page begins as if it is a sappy children's book of the type given to a parent by well-meaning relatives, but are usually the last book the kid wants to hear. But in a twist, they all end with an exhortation to the child to "seriously, just go to sleep!" I found the original version to be funnier, but I could read this one to my 2 1/2 year old son who laughed at the end of each line and kept saying "like Daddy!" He's a bit of a smarta**.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I'm not a parent, but was intrigued by this book. I enjoyed the illustrations quite a bit, and did find the material to be humorous. That being said, I don't think that this was quite a fit for me.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A funny book! I haven't read the original, but my kids and I enjoyed reading this one. My six year old thought it was hilarious. The art isn't quite my style though, and I value art highly in my kid's books.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The best bed-time story ever. The cadence is perfect for lulling a child to sleep, and the prose empathize with many parents who struggle to get their little ones to shut their eyes. I love the illustrations and their hybrid graphic design.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is the kid friendly version of [Go the F*** to Sleep]. It is the thoughts that every parent have going through their heads when their dearest child will not go to sleep. Even though it isn't as funny as the original the message still comes through loud and clear.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5What can I say? I'm a fan of the original, and I'm a fan of the "cleaned up" version.A little background for newcomers. Originally part of the small but effective genre of kids books written for adults, [Go the F**k to Sleep] encapsulates every parent's frustration at a child that has more energy at bedtime that their parents. Of course, the language makes sharing it with those children somewhat questionable. And so the kid-friendly version debuts, in a larger format and with decidedly different language. And yet, the central concept shines through.I do wonder why some of the illustrations changed, although the inclusion of Samuel L. Jackson, who did such a good job with the audio version of the original, was appreciated.Buy it. Read it to your kids. And then, years from now, share with them the unedited version, to let them know what you were REALLY thinking.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The original version of "go the F**K to Sleep is the perfect book for all parents. Every parents can sympathize with the writer. The G-rated version for children is wonderful becuase as they are being read to they start to recognize the things that they do to stall bedtime. This is a book you can share with anyone, great-grandma included, and no one gets offended ande everyone gets a good laugh. Absolutly wonderful book!!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Is there a person left on the planet who hasn't heard of 'Go the F**k to Sleep' from 2011? The book I gift to ANY adult who is even remotely considering having an angelic little baby. I would make it required reading for would-be parents planet-wide. Reading schedule starts at the prospective Mom & Dad's bedtime. Read repeatedly, quietly, loudly, pleading, begging, groveling, at wit's end, but continuously for at least three hours. Then go to bed and get up at your regular time and go to work. Do this for a minimum of one month. Then reconsider child-bearing options. Because babyhood is the easy part. But why not let the unsleepy kids in on their wide-eyed triumph? So the F-bomb was edited out and this highly amusing little G-rated book is the result. "Seriously, Just Go to Sleep." A trophy book letting the little ones know they have won. Mom & Dad haven't a clue how to get the kid to sleep. You win, kid. What a delicious thing to hear! How often did you hear that from a book or your parents when you were growing up? No wonder kids love this book!Read this book to them at bedtime. Then close the book, turn off the light, shut the door and go to bed. Ignore any sounds after this point - You may just yet get some sleep :-)
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I like this version much better than the other one. The first printing for adults was funny for the first sentence and it quickly became old. This one was the perfect length for the kids, although it still seemed to end abruptly. It was a cute book and all parents can certainly identify with children that stall at bedtime.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I received the original book as a gift from a friend after I had my first child. I could easily sympathize with the author because I completely understood where he was when he wrote those. The children's version is quite tame and the illustrations are just as beautiful and dark as in the original. The images in this book, however, contain a bit more color and life. There's room for a child's imagination to run wild. A little whale's tail in the moonlight has been added on one page, three additional teddy bears have been added to match the adjustment in the text from the original book to this version. One lonely child has been changed to a veritable picnic affair in another. And there are horses relaxing in another. The adjustments are interesting and provide a touchstone of imagination for the children. There's even a sly addition of the original book on a pile of books near the end of the text, with edited cover intact, of course. A fun read, worthwhile for enjoying alongside your children.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I'm the mother of 4 and the grandmother of 2 and I absolutely love this book. I also loved the X rated version that I read previously. When I had my oldest son, now in his mid-30s, my mom, the loving mother of 8, shocked me when she said that "the only difference between good mothers and abusive mothers, is that good mothers just think about it" I would never be like that, I thought, but of course, on some of the long nights walking the floor with a crying child I learned that she was right. And so young parents, new parents, read this book and know that you are not alone. That other parents are just as exhausted, just as fed up, just as frustrated. But then, put the baby in a safe spot. Go into the bathroom. Close the door. Turn on the shower, and just scream. You'll feel better. But don't feel guilty because good parents do think about it. But that's all they do.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Seriously, Just Go To Sleep is the kid-friendly version of the brilliant satirical children’s book Go The F—k To Sleep. While the original book was a freaking hilarious read, it really was purely for an adult crowd and should absolutely not be read to an actual child. What makes Seriously, Just Go To Sleep so effective is that it can be enjoyed by all ages, while still maintaining the book’s overall message and tone, just by removing one swear word. A simple change from the original creates a genius new book that can be appreciated by parent and child alike. Highly recommended.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very good art work. A Little repetitive but most children like that, makes them feel good when they can guess what’s coming next.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5As a mother of very rambunctious twin boys, I can appreciate a story such as Seriously, Just Go To Sleep. It is like the author was reading my mind. “My life is absurd. This is taking forever. Stop messing with me, please and sleep”. I feel that I am speaking those words every night in my head. I am glad that Mansbach decided to write a G-rated version. Now, I can share the story with my boys. The illustrator did a wonderful job creating images to match the story. Both author and illustrator have a great sense of humor. Cortes included in the picture the book Goodnight Moon (my favorite) and the original book title Go the F*** to Sleep (bleeped out of course) in one of his illustration towards the end. I like it and think that other parents will too.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I chose to read the child friendly version to Camila. She did not seem amused.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Before I read this, I thought this was like a "part 2" of Go the F*ck to Sleep but it's actually just a clean version of it. It honestly didn't have quite the same effect I thought, but if you want to read to your kids or buy as a gift for someone who can't handle a few cuss words, then this would be the one to get.
