    Harambe’s Revenge

    By Los Pepes

Harambe placed his hand in the water. Harambe loved the water. He stared at his own reflection and thought about the future.

He was celebrating his 17th birthday.

He was going to ask Mara to be his wife and have a family.

He had often fought with the need to be in the zoo. The constant onlookers used to make him nervous. He liked it better when his father zookeeper would play reggae and let him play in the nursery. He was nostalgic for his childhood.

The females in the enclosure always made him anxious. He had to make an impression, but no one showed him the way.

He was finally getting into his own. The other females would never admit this, but they loved the way Harambe was with the human children. How he made faces at them.

    He loved the children.

But there was a calm now. Harambe enjoyed it.

And yet, it had felt a little too calm. Harambe remembered the silence of the fields in Texas when a huge storm was about to take place. The noise of the animals was something he always had to welcome.

He always knew to flee when the storm was coming. But there was nowhere to flee to now.

And that’s when it happened. There was a roaring commotion.

A child fell in Harambe’s pit.

There was screaming. Harambe hated screaming. He thought they were screaming at him. Why were they screaming at him? He was an unarmed 17 year old.

Harambe was scared. Maybe the child was a trap. Maybe the child was sent to kill him. Harambe did not know.

Oftentimes, when he was growing, Harambe would hear the roars of other animals. Even though he was scared, sometimes animals wanted to play.

Harambe wondered if this was the same thing.

Harambe took the child and dragged him through the water. He wondered if this would make the humans feel better. The screamed even louder.

Harambe didn’t know what to do

There was worrying. There was crying. No please, don’t someone said. Harambe wondered what it meant.

    Harambe heard a pop.

He fell to the ground. Harambe was twitching. People had their phones out.

    Harambe stopped breathing.

    He was dead.

    2.

Dr. Susan Andrews arrived at the scene. She was deeply passionate about her work with primates in the wild. The news had devastated her. Harambe was dead.

She did her best to stay
