Crochet Afghans for Beginners - Rebecca Dwight

    Introduction

Crochet is a skill that has been around for a long time and while in modern times it is traditionally seen as a Grandma pastime nothing could be further from the truth. Crochet is a wonderful hobby that can be learned by anyone of any age and is fast starting to get a resurgence in today's everything old is new again society. Not only is it something that is a great hobby, but science has proven that those people who crochet and knit can see health benefits from the craft. Just some of those health benefits include:

Depression relief: Believe it or not crochet can help to relieve depression, it is shown that the repetition of the craft can help release serotonin into the body which is a natural anti-depressant. It might not cure serious depression, but it can help and you get a beautiful project to enjoy afterwards.

Reduces anxiety: Along with reducing depression crochet can help to reduce anxiety by keeping your mind focused on something. Not only will your mind focus, but it will keep your hands busy as well and allow you to keep anxiety issues at bay.

Build self-esteem: When you have low self-esteem it can impact you in a variety of ways and most of that is negative. There are studies that show when you work on craft projects and get them done successfully, you help to build self-esteem back up you do that through several ways such as:

    •  By building new skills.

    •  By making you feel productive.

    •  By allowing you to express beauty through creation.

    •  Allowing you to gift others.

Can help with dementia: While there is nothing that can fully take away dementia, there have been new studies done that show crochet can help postpone or reduce it. For those who are already dealing with the early signs of dementia can find comfort in the task of crochet with the repetitive motion of it.

Aside from the health benefits you will find that crochet is just a truly enjoyable thing to do. Once you start it is likely you will want to continue enjoying what you can make from Afghans to scarves and clothing too! In this book we will focus on the basics you need to make beautiful Afghans and patterns for those Afghans.

Chapter One: The Basics of Crochet

Before you can make a full size Afghan you have to know your crochet basics. In any project you have to make the very first thing you will do is make a foundation chain. It doesn't matter if you are making a full size blanket or a tiny pair of baby booties you will always make a foundation chain. In patterns you will often see chains abbreviated like this: CH but sometimes it will be completely written out it just depends on the pattern.

    Foundation Chains

The first thing you need to do is create a slip knot on the end
