General Davis handed his pistol to Colonel McQuaid and exhaled slowly. Then he stepped out into the open--into the line of fire. He was now entirely unarmed.
McQuaid accepted the weapon reflexively and only reacted after it was too late. General,
he began, his eyes widening and his voice tense--but Davis was already around the temporary barricade and moving forward toward the shorted-out and forced-open doors that had, until the last few moments, guarded the entrance into the Satellite Command Center.
Attention in the satellite center,
Davis called as he advanced slowly, his hands spread open and held at shoulder level. He noticed he was passing a spot where a dark smear stained the floor. It was blood--blood from where one of his troopers had been shot during the first failed attempt to take control of the facility. Anger welled up inside him, but he forced it down. This is General Davis. I understand that you have concerns. I’d like to talk--to discuss them. Come out here, and I will listen to anything you have to say.
For a long moment, there was no response--no sounds whatsoever--from the far end of the corridor. Then at last a male voice called from a place of concealment, You’ll shoot us down.
I won’t,
Davis replied, shaking his head slowly. I’m unarmed.
