You’d be surprised what their teeth can chew through. House plants can easily be destroyed, books can be ripped to shreds, and electronic toys and gadgets like remotes can be decimated with chew marks. Inevitably, they will find creative ways to entertain themselves at the expense of your belongings. Before bringing your new furry companion home, it is important to puppy proof your house. 

First, you should determine where you want your puppy to be able to go in and outside of the house. Secure those areas where you don’t want your puppy to go. Pet stores and department stores sell pet barriers and folding gates that can accomplish this. They tend to retail for $30 and up, but if you’re handy you can construct them yourself. Outside of your house, make sure the entire perimeter of your fence is strong and secure. It’s a very good idea to cover or fence off your pool, pond, or other large bodies of water. Even though dogs are great swimmers, they are still vulnerable to drowning, especially when puppies.  While they are still very young, It is a good idea to put your puppy in a confined space. You can set up a ‘playpen’ area with enough space for them to move around, but not enough to get themselves into trouble.

Inside your home, common hazards are trash cans and electrical systems. you should either hide your trash cans, or secure them with lids. Besides the mess, puppies can also hurt themselves on the sharp edges of cans or get caught in mangled trash. Any electrical wiring should be covered or moved. You should also purchase covers for your electrical outlets. 

Chemicals are also a serious hazard. Any substance that would harm you to consume will most likely harm your dog too. Any cleaning supplies, pesticides, antifreeze, or any other chemicals should be locked away in a cabinet or put out of reach. Dogs can also chew through child safe bottles, so keep all medicines securely in the medicine cabinet. Basically, anything valuable, toxic, or otherwise intended for  humans should be removed from your puppy’s reach.

Start Off With The Right Approach - Positive Reinforcement

The most fundamental concept to keep in mind while training your dog is Positive Reinforcement. Positive reinforcement means immediately rewarding any behaviors you find desirable. The two primary ways to reward a dog is with treats, and with both vocal and physical affection. Treats are a great way to reward your puppy at first, but it is best to eventually reward them with praise and
