Alison Young
Alison Young is a highly skilled veterinarian who has spent the large part of her life professionally caring for, and training, dogs. She started as a child on the icy coasts of Maine, helping locally with what dogs her neighbors and family couldn't handle, until she was old enough to be properly registered. Because of her dedication to her work and animals, Alison graduated at the top 5% of her class with honors. She now lives in bright and sunny California with her busy family of 3 daughters (ages from 6 to 13, a couple of which are looking to follow their mother’s footsteps), two adopted dogs (rescues) and her lone cat who to this day also seems to think it’s a dog. When she's not working full-time as a veterinarian, or bustling around with her busy household, she works hard to ensure everyone who has a dog can care for it and ensure that it and the owner are happy. She has written several professional papers on this topic and is always eager to expand to people who are outside of the field as well. Alison is a strong believer that pets are part of the family and that there’s no such thing as an animal that’s a lost cause.

DOG’S BEST FRIEND
An Interactive Guide to Bettering Yourself Through Your Dog Training
Ah, your very first puppy. You’ve done your homework, researched breeds, scouted the local shelters and you are ready to commit. Congratulations on taking the plunge. It is a huge step for even the most patient people. The thrill of becoming a parent to one of the most fascinating creatures on the planet is second to none. People tell you that having a dog is akin to having a child and in many ways that’s completely accurate. They demand constant attention, pee incessantly, eat the weirdest items and follow you everywhere. However, the choice to bring a dog into your world is not at all like having a child in the sense that this little one will never grow up to make his own breakfast, become too cool for your affection or flitter off to college one day. He will remain your furry, needy toddler forever and while this is sometimes an endearing quality, other times it will be nerve wracking and highly overwhelming.
Throughout your studying, you have no doubt found that training is essential to keeping the peace in your home but that aside, it is also imperative for building a solid relationship between you and your mutt. Many people don’t realize just how much their pet is a reflection of themselves. Surely you’ve heard of people who look like their dogs (or is it vice versa?). This is called assimilation and it occurs when living beings of whatever persuasion spend copious amounts of time together. They tend to adopt each other’s characteristics as time passes. It is interesting that very few people can recognize this aspect of pet ownership. Training can be a two way street and your dog can teach you a great deal about yourself if you allow him to do so.
This piece will discuss the many avenues of training, how they are applied and what the benefits are that can result from these exercises. It will also shed some light on the pitfalls that dog ownership can have as well as explaining some lesser talked about aspects which are sometimes used but considered controversial. The better educated you are, the more prepared you will be for those shocking – but often times – hilarious surprises your new addition will throw at you.
BEFORE BRINGING HOME BUSTER
The most common mistake people make when bringing home a dog is being completely unprepared for when he physically arrives. Sure, you know every single thing there is to know about your new buddy from his DNA make up to his parents’ mating habits. You’ve schooled yourself on how to groom him, the best doggie day care and where to buy Harley Davidson bandanas for his neck. The only problem is you don’t actually possess the essentials you’ll need to create a stable environment to begin a fruitful training experience. Here is a handy list of must-haves you should collect prior to bringing him home:
Toys
An obvious choice, but think broader than tennis balls and squeaky frogs. While those are popular and Junior will thoroughly enjoy playing with them, there are
