    Dedication

To my children who remind me every day that there is nothing more important in life than unconditional love.

To my mother who always pushed me to learn more and read more. You have been my champion no matter what the circumstances.

    Chapter One

Therrin’s twelfth birthday party was an amazing evening filled with friends and family. Owen stood in the corner, watching as his daughter turned the age Seers were considered for their final phase of training and their commitment to being a Seer—mystical psychic warriors who were peacemakers of the universe. A commitment that dictated their life path.

He was older now, wiser in years, but he still remembered the day she was born and the way it changed his life—how two small hands wrapped around his heart forever and never let go.

It had been cold, and the wind whistled outside Ashlandia. Owen and Viera had made their way to the retreat early in the morning because Viera was in labor. This was their first time being in labor, and they lacked experience. Such a weird feeling for two people who had a lot of experience in war and politics—but babies–they lacked anything close to the experience needed to raise a child.

She’ll be fine, Raydia had said to Owen as he stood looking at the closed door behind which were Viera, her mother, her sister and the physician. Fathers weren’t allowed to be with their wives during labor on Ethesreld. It was a tradition dating back to before anyone could remember and Viera was staunch in the need to honor the tradition of her home world. She had been their leader and wanted to set a good example for her people.

I know, Owen whispered. His world was beyond that door, and it was frightening to think what would happen if they were taken from him. The old Owen would have never known what he was missing, but now he did, and he never wanted it to end. They were the only reason he continued to breathe, and he would give his last breath to save them.

You can’t control everything, Raydia said and put his hand on Owen’s shoulder for comfort. Come, sit down and enjoy being a father on Ethesreld.

Owen felt the cold pressure of a glass placed in his hand and looked down at the amber colored liquid sloshing inside. Ethesreld was known for its lively trade in liquor, and some of the best brands were kept by the people there. Quickly Owen downed the drink and slid into the chair next to Raydia, letting the warmth of the liquid fill him inside and calm his nerves.

I remember when Viera was born, Raydia said lost in memories. The moon was beautiful that evening, and I thought it was the perfect name for her because she shone just as brightly. She still does.

Owen smiled at the thought of Viera as a small child. He was sure she was just as determined as she was now. He loved how she never gave up on the things she wanted and that included him.

How long was her mother in labor? Owen asked.

Oh, Viera was the second, so it was short. I think maybe three hours. Now with Valerie—Raydia laughed—I sat with Mahalia’s father and brother for almost two days.

Two days? Owen worried. Maybe more liquor was called for to calm his nerves.

She is strong, Owen, Raydia said. You will have your child soon just because Viera is too stubborn to leave you out here alone with me for too long. I might teach you some tricks.

Minutes crept into hours as Owen sat in the chair. The light from the small window on the far wall began to grow dimmer as the evening hours approached. A servant brought dinner to the two men. They enjoyed soup and bread while waiting for the birth and talked about memories.

Valerie approached the two men to give an update. She looked tired but joyful in a way Owen couldn’t explain. She seemed to glow with happiness.

Viera is doing well, she said and held Owen’s hand tightly between hers. She placed Viera’s wedding ring into his palm, closing his fingers tightly around it for safe keeping. She wants you to hold this until the baby is born.

The gesture was small, but Owen understood the undying love of his wife. She was willing to let him have her precious wedding ring until she retrieved it from him, signifying she would live and be with him again. He felt tears in his eyes but swiped at them with his finger to stop them from rolling down his face. This was a joyous occasion and tears weren’t necessary yet.

Thank you, he said his voice shaking from the unspoken emotions building inside of him.

I better get back to her, Valerie said releasing his hand, and Owen rose to follow her to the door. She’s in terrible pain right now, so I think it will be soon.

Owen nodded and watched her slip back inside the room.

If Viera was in pain, there were no signs outside of the room. Owen was tempted to use his psychic abilities to read her mind, but she made him promise, before she was even in labor, to not read anything passing through her mind. Maybe she didn’t want to hurt his feelings with the terrible things he was sure she was thinking about him. She had to think he was getting the better end of the deal.

He respected her wishes though and sat back down in the chair looking at the silver band in his palm. It was just a symbol of their love, but he knew how much it meant to her. She never took it off.

I could take the pain from her, Owen said looking at Raydia. The older man was always leery of the powers Owen possessed. She won’t let me. She said it would be cheating, and she wouldn’t know the beauty of giving birth to a child.

That is spoken like someone who has never gone through it. Raydia laughed.

A smile spread across Owen’s face. The two men had shared a laugh. It felt good to laugh and not worry about what was happening just on the other side of that door, even if it was never far from his mind.

Have you chosen names? Raydia asked raising his eyebrows expectantly at Owen. Viera also made Owen promise not to reveal
