About this ebook

Steve's relationship with his lover, Carlos, has been on the rocks lately. For months now, they've been distant to each other, quick to argue, and Steven isn't quite sure what's come between them. A night spent clubbing together seemed just the ticket to patch things up and, sure enough, the first half of their evening went well.

But after leaving the club, Carlos must have taken a wrong turn somewhere because the two find themselves lost in the back roads of New Jersey, what's known as the Pine Barrens. Half-joking, Carlos tells Steven a local legend about a mysterious creature called the Jersey Devil.

Then they're run off the road by ... something, Steven can't say what. He feels it out there in the woods watching them. Waiting ...

    Devil of a Night

    By J.M. Snyder

As Steven Hendricks stared out the window at the passing night and the pine trees hemming in the narrow two-lane highway down which they drove, a stretch of desolate road deserted at this late hour, he prayed his boyfriend Carlos Menendez knew where they were going. This was New Jersey, Carlos had reasoned; he knew this part of the state like the back of his hand. Never fear, he had assured Steven.

But the last vestige of civilization Steven had seen was an old rundown gas station set off the road about three miles back, and he was beginning to suspect maybe, just maybe, they were lost. Where are we, again? he asked softly, glancing at his boyfriend from the corner of his eye.

Carlos frowned at the road ahead. Jersey.

No shit, Steven thought, but he wisely kept that comment to himself.

Since the bright lights of Camden had faded behind them over an hour ago, the air in the car between the two men had grown strained and tense. Steven wanted to ask what had happened to them lately—they used to be good together, with comfortable silences and flirty laughter and sweet kisses that passed the time away. But since the start of the fall semester, Carlos had grown distant and quick to argue, and Steven didn’t know what he had done or didn’t do to turn their relationship awry. He wanted his boyfriend back; he wanted to see Carlos’s eyes crinkle when he smiled, to taste Carlos’s lips again, to feel Carlos’s hands on his body. Yet every word they spoke twisted into something more, and Steven found himself biting his tongue to keep from lashing out at Carlos whenever they were alone.

Carlos’s sharp retorts and scathing replies didn’t help matters any. Tonight they had gone to a club together, Steven eager to mend whatever it was that seemed to be tearing them apart, and for the first half of the evening, things had gone smoothly
