When Serol, a Guardian Angel, is given the rare chance to be with the

he would win her heart. In an epic tale of friendship and love, duty
and betrayal, that unfolds in the quiet mountain town of Pagosa
Springs, Colorado, Serenity Skye, an unsuspecting human, discovers
that the world she lives in is more complex and dangerous than she
ever could have imagined

New World opens the door to a mystical world, offering a third option
to the oft-asked question “Heaven or Hell?” Based in Pagosa Springs,
Colorado, it tells a story of Serenity Skye, a head-strong,
conventional teenager who is comfortable in her life. Serenity is not
a risk taker, and she prefers it that way. She has everything...a

Zhier Heaton, her polar opposite, and a product of a different world,

in his way. Fate leads their escape to the tiny mountain town in
Colorado where Heaven, Earth, and Trilogy threaten to collide, and
Hell lurks in the corners. With compelling characters, unexpected

    Every Tomorrow - Yeanelle Smith

    Prologue

    On the way to Hell….

The man named Carlson was clad in worn out clothes that were more than filthy. His blue jeans were torn in several places, one exposing a wounded knee that was seeping blood. His shirt, once green, was now covered in bright, fresh blood that didn’t belong to him. His breathing was hoarse and uneven as he walked down a dark alley of Detroit. To the untrained eye, Carlson would appear a homeless man looking desperately for a place to stay, but to the young man hiding in the shadows, this was a man who had raped, tortured, and killed a handful of women and was now on the run. This was a man hiding from death.

Carlson’s legs were getting tired, slowing his pace. He could still hear the police coming after him, but it appeared that he had evaded them for now. Every few steps, he grunted in pain, but he didn’t stop walking. His life depended on it. The young man watched silently as Carlson walked closer and closer to the darkest end of the alley. Soon, the young man would meet Carlson, this man that had committed many horrible crimes, the kind of man that he had met many times before.

Startled by the sound of tires squealing on a nearby street, Carlson looked back in anticipation. He wondered if he would feel any type of relief if he were caught. He contemplated turning himself in. Disgust washed over him when he thought about what his family would think of him if only they knew his secret. Reluctantly, he turned back, picked up his pace, and kept walking; wondering now how long he would have to hide and if he would ever be safe again.

A few feet ahead of him, Carlson could see what looked like the figure of a man standing very still in the dark shadows. Maybe it was a homeless man taking refuge in the cold dark alley. He could not take that chance. Carlson dug into his pants pocket and extracted a chrome nine- millimeter hand gun that he kept hidden for situations like this one. Unexpectedly, the male figure advanced towards him. This startled Carlson, as the figure was not walking, he was floating. Carlson gripped his gun tightly.

Who’s there? Carlson’s hoarse voice echoed through the alley.

Your future, a voice echoed back.

S—top where you are at, I have a gun, and I’ll use it! I swear I will!

The man made no effort to stop. Your gun is useless, he said simply.

For some reason, Carlson believed him. What do you want?

At this point the man was standing less than five feet away from Carlson. He was very young, younger than him. He appeared no older than eighteen. Practically still a boy; this young man could be his son. He was clad all in black. His dark hair was slicked back, exposing black eyes that were noticeable even in the dark. They glowed eerily. The hair on the back of Carlson’s neck started to stand. Carlson looked back, contemplating making a run for it.

Don’t bother, the young man said. I can feel everything you’re thinking, every emotion you’re having. You won’t get far, believe me, Carlson.

He knew his name. Awareness consumed his body. Carlson understood. There was nowhere to run. This man would be there wherever he went. Just like all the women Carlson had murdered, without warning, his life on this earth as he knew it would be coming to an end.

Are you the angel of death? Carlson concluded.

If you prefer to see it that way, he answered, not once taking his obsidian eyes off of Carlson. But to clarify, I am no angel.

Where are you taking me? Carlson mumbled.

To your eternity in what you would call—Hell, the young man replied with a hint of a smile.

Police! Freeze! a man standing far behind Carlson yelled.

Startled once again, Carlson turned around to face a police- man, his right hand still tightly gripping the gun.

Put the weapon down slowly, the policeman ordered.

But Carlson couldn’t comply. Without his consent, his body reluctantly got in to a defensive position. Frightened like never before, he was aiming a gun at the policeman; losing complete control of his actions. Carlson tried, with all his will, to regain control of his body, all to no avail. It was as if he was being possessed by someone or something. Within half a second, the policeman aimed and fired twice. Carlson fell to the ground with two loud thuds.

Carlson opened his eyes, realizing what just happened, anticipating the upcoming pain. But there wasn’t any. What he did see was the young man standing over him, his dark eyes still glaring. But his face wasn’t the same anymore. It was distorted, changing right in front of Carlson’s eyes. He could hear bones cracking while the man’s face seemed to be moving in every direction. He was changing into something inhumane, something indescribable. Horrified, Carlson tried, with no success, to shut his eyes. The handsome young man with the piercing black eyes was a monster.

    Chapter 1: An Angel’s Love

    In Heaven….

Serol stared at the young girl lying on her bed, memorizing, like he had a million times before, the perfect outlines of her face. He could never understand why his fellow guardians would get bored with such a job. Maybe because to Serol this was more of a hobby than a job; he could do this forever. Perhaps it was that his fellow guardians never had a chance to guard someone as perfect as Serenity truly was.

But, it wasn’t just her looks that set Serenity apart from the average human. It was soul. In all the centuries at his job, Serol had never guarded a human subject with a soul like Serenity’s. Out of the five hundred charges he was guarding even now, Serenity held an unparalleled spot when it came to the purity of a human. Serenity was the most loving, caring, and open-minded person that Serol had come across in a very long time. Even Archangel Michael was impressed with Serenity’s soul.

It is quite impressive to see a soul like this one in times like these, the archangel expressed. Archangel Michael was never one to give empty compliments.

If only she could get into some trouble, he thought. Maybe then his devotion would be justified. But he knew better. Serenity not only tried to make the right decisions for herself, but also did it for her mother, too, so that her mother did not have to add more worries to the trials and tribulations of being a single parent. To Sasha, Serenity was her life, the reason for her existence. Everything she accomplished was with Serenity’s well-being in mind. Serenity was well aware of her mother’s feelings and thus made a promise to herself never to disappoint Sasha. Thus far, this promise had been kept.

I love you, Pa Royce, Serenity whispered in her sleep.

Ah, so you’re dreaming of your grandfather tonight, Serol whispered back, while gently brushing a strand of hair from her face. Pa Royce had died almost a year ago, but he always seemed to appear in her dreams. You will dream with beautiful colors, he told her.

Serol touched her forehead lightly and concentrated on the colors of the rainbow, filling his mind with the beauty one could only dream of seeing on earth so that Serenity could see it in her dreams. And she did. Her perfectly filled lips parted into a smile.

    It’s beautiful, she whispered.

Her joy always made Serol’s heart flutter. He only wished he could be with her forever to make her smile permanent. But, it would be breaking the rules. An angel, especially a guardian angel, could never be with a human. It was unheard of. If the Elders were ever to find out his true feelings for Serenity, he hadn’t a doubt that Serenity would no longer be one of his subjects. Serol couldn’t bear even thinking of that possibility.

A crush was natural, but love? No, he would make sure he kept his feelings guarded from the other angels. He would have to work harder on not seeing her as much. Serol cringed at the very thought, his heart already in pain. But he knew there was no other way.

Ahh, querida, I will miss you so much.

    II

The two Archangels looked glorious standing next to each other. It was not often that one was privileged enough to see two Archangels in tandem. Though Archangel Michael was the eldest, he looked the youngest. His features were reminiscent of a twenty-year-old human. His mesmerizing blond hair curled in loops that made the eye dizzy to follow. He had boyish features, almost baby- like. Yet, it was his eyes that were the most compelling. His hazel eyes, the color of an emerald, held the depth of a man that had lived for centuries beyond his looks. Archangel Michael was not only the eldest, but the most powerful of the archangels. He had the ability to control natural phenomena including rain, hail, snow, wind, thunder, lightning, and even fire. He was well known as the leader of battles. It would be unwise to anger him.

Standing next to him was Archangel Gabriel, the angel possessing the most intelligence. He too commanded a strong presence. As striking as Archangel Michael, his pitch black hair hung long and straight, enrobing his broad muscular shoulders, giving him a gothic look. His muscles made him look older than Archangel Michael, but not by much. His bronze skin provided him with youth that any human would envy. Archangel Gabriel was a messenger, the bearer of good news.

Maybe this wasn’t as bad as Serol thought. With Archangel Gabriel’s presence, it could only be good news, right? But, then again, that would depend on the Archangel’s definition of good news. From the very moment that Serol had been summoned to see the Archangels, he was a nervous wreck.

Two Archangels. This could only mean a really good promotion or an imminent beheading. Had they found out his true feelings for Serenity? Instinctively, he felt the sudden urge to run back to Serenity and hide her in a place where no one would find her…not even the almighty Archangels.

    There was no such place.

Archangel Michael spoke first. Hello Serol, glad you could join us.

Likewise, Serol forced a smiled. The pleasure is all mine.

Archangel Gabriel took one step towards Serol. He looked at him with a small frown, but a second later, he smiled. I sense that you’re nervous, child. Please don’t be. There is no reason for your distress. He seemed amused.

I will try my best not to be, Serol replied.

You’re wondering why we have summoned you, he stated it more like a fact than a question.

    Yes, of course….I, I was.

Don’t stutter, Serol thought. Stuttering was a sign of weakness, a sign that he was hiding something.

Archangel Michael placed his hand on Gabriel’s shoulder. Gabriel came to me with some great news about your Serenity.

Instantly, like the strike of lightning, Serol’s legs felt weak. They knew, he thought. Now they were going to take Serenity away from him. They were going to pull his heart directly out of his chest and there was nothing he could do. He felt powerless. Defeated, Serol kept silent, waiting.

It seems, Michael continued. That Serenity’s future is of importance to us and the good of all mankind. We need your help.

This was not what Serol had expected. His help? His help with what? Serol knew of many ways he could help Serenity, but he knew for sure that was not what the Archangels had in mind. Maybe they just needed his help to stay away from her.

I don’t understand, he managed to say.

Gabriel continued where Michael left off, as if he hadn’t heard Serol, In the future, Serenity will have a child, a child that will grow to become a very important man. A man that will find cures for diseases, a great doctor with an immense heart.

He will be respected and loved by all of mankind. He will have a soul even more virtuous and vigorous than Serenity’s. He will be important in our near future. Of course, we only got a peek of the future and the future can change depending on what Our Great Father decides; but one thing I am certain of is that this child will exist.

The more Gabriel kept talking, the more Serol became confused. He didn’t know what he had to do with this child that Serenity was to have, a child that she will have to create with another man, a human. An unfamiliar feeling began to overwhelm him.

You are wondering what exactly we need your help with, Gabriel supposed. At this point all Serol could do was nod.

We want you to father that child, they both said with in perfect sympathy and triumphant smiles on their faces.

Serol could only stare at both Archangels in utter shock. For a moment, he was frozen in time, Father the child? Serol murmured.

Archangel Gabriel continued to be amused at Serol’s current state of mind. Yes, he said simply, with no attempt to hide his smile. We all know you’re in love with her.

What followed was almost a blur; a blur that Serol would always remember. The Archangels had decided that Serol would be sent to earth as a living, breathing human being. He was to court Serenity. Become her friend and possibly her husband. He was to father her child. They would assign another Guardian for Serenity. However, that didn’t matter in the least to Serol for he was going to be with her for the rest of his human existence.

As a human, Archangel Michael explained, Serol would have memories implanted in him of a past he never had. He would have foster parents and a foster sister. A very honest family, the archangel promised. Soon after, two important things were going to happen. He would meet Serenity for the first time, in person that is, and, at that precise moment, he would remember his angel roots along with reason for his human existence.

Serol would attend school and live as normally as possible. He would eat, bleed, breathe, and feel all human emotions. But they wouldn’t leave him powerless. Archangel Rafael, another archangel, who possessed the ability to heal, left Serol a part of his gift. The gift of healing.

Archangel Rafael made it clear that this gift was only to be used when truthfully needed, and he was not to use it where he would be exposed. Serol was never to tell Serenity that he was once her guardian angel, or an angel at all for that matter. It was a secret that he would have to keep forever locked in his heart. And he would. Anything to be with Serenity, and so, in two human days, the Archangels would clip his wings.

As he kneeled down next to Serenity’s bed for the last time, he counted the hours, minutes, and seconds it would take to finally have Serenity’s tender body in his hands. To forever feel the warmth of her body the way a human would. He closed his eyes and imagined how it would be to have her delicate hands wrapped around his. He would share his life with her. He would give her anything she wanted.

Serol knew everything about Serenity. He was her guardian angel from the day of her birth. What a glorious day that had been for him. From the moment that he laid eyes on her, he saw how exceptional she was. From there on, he slowly learned to love Serenity like no other. He knew what she loved most, what made her cry, what made her laugh, and ultimately what made her happy. There wasn’t anything Serol didn’t know about Serenity.

Serol leaned towards Serenity and whispered directly in her ear, Soon querida, I will be with you, my love.

Soon, she murmured back as she slept.

Chapter 2: A piece of Serenity

The most authentic thing about us is our capacity to create, to overcome, to endure, to transform, to love and to be greater than our suffering. Ben Okri

    On Earth…..

Serenity Skye thought that she hadn’t missed her home town until the very moment that she came back. She knew that she had only left for a months, the longest month of her life; but, coming back to her more-than- humble home made her feel like she’d been missing the air from her lungs. She couldn’t fool herself; she had a wonderful time spending the last months of summer in Cape Verde with her grandmother. She enjoyed the scenic oceans, and the homey feeling of her culture, yet she had also missed that part of herself that belonged to the place that had raised her. She missed the gorgeous mountains, the magnificent waterfalls, and the mysterious forest that Pagosa Spring had offered her for more than ten years. But, mostly she missed her over protective mother and best friend.

Ever since she could remember, Serenity had spent the last month of every summer with her grandmother in Cape Verde, her place of birth. Her father died of lung cancer when she was only seven years old and, so, to keep the family ties, Sasha, her mother, complied into letting her stay for two months every year with her fathers’ mother. Sasha could have moved back to Cape Verde after Serenity’s father died, but she was determined to raise Serenity on her own without anyone’s help. A year after his death, she became a Registered Nurse, and there after the sole bread winner of their diminutive, but loving, family, her and Serenity. Pride and determination were Sasha’s last names. Physically, they couldn’t deny their genetic similarities, but mentally and emotionally, Sasha was not only stronger, but also was always self-confident. Looking at her now, and remembering what she had to endure to get to where she was, Serenity could see the reason behind Sasha’s strength and confidence.

Are you ready for the first day of your senior year? Sasha said, peeking through the door. She wore her usual white scrubs, her long beautiful hair put up in a messy bun. She appeared to be tired.

Yes and no, I’m a nervous wreck mom," Serenity made it a point to never lie to Sasha-no matter what the situation was.

Well it’s only the last year of your teenage life, she rolled her eyes with exaggeration. What is there to be nervous about?

    I know, right?

Serenity, she said in a more serious tone. Just make sure you enjoy every minute of it, you only get to be this age once, you know.

I will mom, don’t worry. At least she’d try, she thought. You make sure you get some rest, you look tired.

Yeah, It was supposed to be my day off, but Carly called in sick, she said looking at her wrist watch. This reminds me, I’m late. Just wanted to make sure I was here for your big day. I love you, Sweetie, everything will be great.

Thank s Mom. I love you, too.

She started to leave, but then she made an abrupt stop. Oh, Serenity, I forgot, Serol called, said to tell you to pick up your cell phone. I told him just to pick you up in ten, she said the last words while rushing down the stairs.

Darn cell phone! Lately she’d been misplacing little things here and there, especially her phone. If her head wasn’t connected to her body, she would probably misplace that, too, she thought. Serol must have called to wish her happy anniversary. Today was not only special because it was the first day of her senior year, but also because it marked a year from the day that she and Serol had met for the first time.

Serenity would always remember that day, the day that the McKlain family had moved in two blocks from her house. Everyone on the block wanted to meet the McKlain kids, Ruby and Serol. She’d decided to give them room to have a feel of the Colorado atmosphere. That same day, her brand new, straight-out-of-the-lot Dodge Neon, had mysteriously given out on her smack in front of the McKlains new home. She had thought that maybe she left the lights on overnight. Serol willingly helped her revive the Neon. Since that day, Serol and Serenity had been inseparable. He had become her best friend, her confidant, and her soul mate. She was more than happy to spend the last year of her teenage life with Serol by her side, certain that he felt the same way.

Staring at herself in the mirror, Serenity realized that nothing had changed about her. It wasn’t like she thought that being a senior would automatically change her into something else, she just hoped that by this time she would look . . . well, a tiny bit more mature than last year. Yet, nothing had changed. Her reflection still mirrored a slender, petite body that would probably belong to a sophomore, but never a senior. Her hair hung in waves to the middle of her back in an untamable way; she didn’t feel like fighting a battle, so, she quickly put it up in a ponytail letting it hang wildly, but out of the way. She inspected her tank top for the last time. It was quite a job putting this outfit together the night before for the first day of school. She wanted to look perfect, different, so, in a way, she could mark this day as the beginning of a new and, hopefully, exciting life. The turquoise tank top that she picked out was tightly fitted, giving her small breasts a little lift, but not enough for her liking.

So much for Victoria’s Secret, she mumbled.

She slipped on her brand new jeans to complete the outfit. Taking one last glance at the mirror she checked her makeup. Usually she didn’t use much makeup, but to change things up, she decided that instead of just lip gloss and eyeliner, she would add a bit of blush to give a speck of life to her copper-colored cheeks. She concluded that cute was as good as it was going to get, so, grabbing her black denim book bag she headed towards the driveway to meet Serol.

So, are you ready to rule the school? Serol asked as Serenity climbed into his blue Nissan Titan.

She couldn’t help it, though Serenity talked to him every night during the months she was gone, seeing Serol’s warm eyes brought a familiar feeling of home. He dressed casual today, as usual, with jeans and a baby blue shirt that brought out the ocean blue in his eyes that were hidden in abundance of lovely long eyelashes. His hair, a light golden brown with blond tints, a hot commodity when he started school last year, gave him the just got out of bed look that was in style these days. Serol had a slender, but athletic, toned body. He was a perfect 6’3" basketball player and humbly stunning.

Hey, Ruby, Serenity quickly greeted Serol’s sister, who was in the back seat obliviously listening to her IPod. She nodded in response.

Serenity gave Serol a kiss on the cheek before she settled in her seat. Yeah, ready to rule! she said.

He swiftly lifted an eyebrow. No, you’re not. You’re nervous, he accused.

Serenity couldn’t argue. In fact, she could never argue with Serol. He always seemed to know exactly what she was feeling, or how she would feel with certain situations. She always felt like she could be herself with him, a task she’d often found hard to accomplish when trying to please everyone else. Unquestionably, he knew her better than she knew herself. Everything was always so effortless around him. Instead of the quiet listener that she’d always been to everyone, she was a more vocal person with him.

So when are you going to let me use my Neon? Serenity retorted, ignoring his accusation. It’s practically accumulating cob webs in the garage you know. The Neon had been a gift from Serenity’s grandma on her sixteenth birthday.

And, you can ride with me. You and your sister wouldn’t have to share the Titan, she concluded.

He puckered his brows as if thinking about it, but Serenity knew better. No, he said. Your car isn’t mine and this car is at least half mine. Ruby doesn’t like driving anyhow.

If she didn’t know for a fact that Serol was seventeen years old and lived in this millennia, Serenity would have thought he came directly out of those nineteen-forties movies where men absolutely did the honorable thing, like providing the car, or paying the bill. He was, at times, so prideful.

Did I tell you how beautiful you look today?

Barely, she blushed. Serenity closed her eyes to enjoy the rest of the ride to the first day of her senior year.

Chapter 3: First day of School

Except for the occasional teasing the freshmen had to endure from the seniors, the first day of school was pretty much uneventful. Serenity was more than happy when she found out that Yahaira was in her English class. First, because English was her least favorite subject, it would be a pain to suffer the long hours without a friend. Second, Yahaira was the most eccentric and passionate person she had ever met. She always had an exciting and momentous story to tell. Sometimes her life seemed more like a soap opera on its very best season. And, thirdly, but most importantly; was that, aside from Serol and Tina, another one of her friends, Yahaira was her best friend, an essential part of her life. The exciting part. She had the courage to be herself, no matter what anybody thought, an admirable quality, as well as a big heart.

The joy Serenity felt to see her best friend was shattered when Yahaira noticed an anniversary card Serol had thoughtfully sneaked into Serenity’s book bag.

Oh-my-God, that is so sweet! Yahaira squirmed.

Thanks, she said, knowing there was more to come.

So, tell me what did you do for the summer, did you guys—

No! I mean, no, we didn’t do that, we are taking things slow. Serenity knew she was blushing every shade of red imaginable.

Yahaira made the most comical shocked expression she’d ever seen. Are you serious? I don’t know how you do it, gurl. He is fu-Ine! You’re crazy, but it’s cute I guess, she said, shrugging.

    Yeah, there’s no rush.

And there really wasn’t. Serol never pressured her into doing anything she didn’t want to do. He was really adamant about Serenity losing her virginity after marriage. She was pleasantly in agreement. Aside from the occasional hugging and kissing, everyone would categorize their relationship as platonic, especially in Yahaira’s eyes. Honestly, she didn’t understand what the whole racket was about. It would be interesting if it really wasn’t as good as everyone made it out to be, though secretly she hoped it was.

I’m going to buy you a hallmark card when you finally do it, she said. It will say ‘Congratulations, you finally lost your virginity!’ She said it so loud that the class broke out in giggles.

Mr. Rivers, the English teacher, mimicked a zipper from the left side of his mouth to the right. Yahaira rolled her eyes.

"So, did you hear about the Heatons and their new twin
