    Introduction

    Many of us have more stories than we know what to do with sometimes: to read, to tell, and to remember.

    I wrote these thirty-one stories during Flash Fiction Month – an event where one writes a story between fifty-five and a thousand words in length every day for the month of July.

    And – because this collection was not yet overfull enough for this author's liking – I have included two more tales at the end of this book. These extra stories were not written during July, but they were written later in 2016, so we will make room for them here too.

    Paths and Choices

    Her long hair waves ahead of him like a dark flag. It urges him on. They run together through the rows of corn and he grabs hold of her hand in the dimness.

    He feels the cold air biting at his cheeks. They both pause in front of a fork in the path. He can feel his heart pounding inside his ribs, his lungs struggling for space.

    Which way is safe?

    His sneakers drag in the straw – scuff the dirt.
