Note from the Author
The lessons in this book are told from my perspective. Obviously, certain stories will have distinct meanings to different people; so I will let you be the judge of what each story means to you.
The Difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.
Vince Lombardi
You Can Do It!
Expand or Make Money
A rich businessman was extremely irritated because no matter how hard he tried, he simply couldn’t successfully expand his business. Frustrated, he hired an independent financial/business advisor to analyze his company in order to find the reasons why he was unable to expand.
The advisor came and spent a week analyzing the company’s every aspect and inner workings. He sat in on all of the staff meetings, he talked individually to every employee and, to really get a thorough analysis, he spent a considerable amount of time with the owner of the company as well. He spent time with him inside and outside of the company.
The day before making his final analysis, the businessman invited him to his country club to play a round of gulf. The advisor went and together they had a great afternoon of playing golf.
Then, the following day the advisor sat with the businessman to go over with him his analysis of the company.
With a very, matter of fact demeanor, the advisor says to the businessman. I have comprehensively analyzed your company, but ultimately, before I share with you my assessment, I have one major question to ask of you.
Sure, you can ask me anything!
Responded the entrepreneur.
Is it your goal to expand your business, or make money?
He asked in a thought provoking manner.
The businessman was a little confused by the question so looking right at the advisor he responds, What do you mean? I want to do both. I want to grow so that I may make more money.
That’s not possible,
responded the advisor.
Why not?
Asked the entrepreneur.
You have to make a choice because right now you make lots of money. However, from what I can see, you use most of that money financing a better lifestyle for yourself and for your family. I am talking about the country club, the private schools, the chauffeurs, the maids, and many other amenities that I probably wasn’t even able to see.
He continued. "So if you really want to grow, you have no choice but to invest a significant amount of your money back into your company and not into yourself. That’s the only way your company will be able to expand into more locations. Even though it will seem as though you have no money, your company will be thriving
