FOREWORD
I first met Rodney in a small sound booth when I was auditioning actors for Adult Swim’s Minoriteam animated series. Rodney was the first person I interviewed for the role of Fasto. After Rodney did just one read I realized I didn’t need to see anyone else.
It’s rare that someone comes in and nails the part immediately, but Rodney is a singular talent. More importantly, he has the mark of a true professional. He comes into every voice-over session with a positive attitude, great ideas, and an open mind. When he steps up to the mic, he’s not just ready to work, he’s ready to help create a character.
Listen to what this man has to say. He knows what he is talking about, and he’s writing it down for you to use. There is no greater gift.

PREFACE
When you are asked what pleases you most in life, your response is most likely swift, precise, and to the point. You don’t have to search for superlatives to describe what you are most passionate about. The words flow from your lips like raindrops nourishing the pasture of your passion.
Those of us who are part of the voice-over industry speak in this manner all the time, because we truly love what we do. We have the dream jobs—the opportunity to use our vocal gifts to promote products and causes we believe in, and to give voice to animated characters that entertain our children, while encouraging them to grow up and use their voices to bring joy to others.
As much as you love what you do, there will be times when you do not work steadily and you might question your decision to pursue this career. I wrote this book to help you through those challenging periods.
Step Up to the Mic is a feel-good book that reminds you of the power of positive thinking. The ability to put your career on a pathway to financial and spiritual success is within your power. Affirmation of your worth is available 24/7—if you want it.
You don’t have to go far to get this affirmation, because it is within you. The choice is yours. You can sit around and fret, or you can get up and smile. Feel grateful for good health and spiritual prosperity as you pursue your goals.
Once you lift the burden of negativity off your back, you acquire clarity. Your mind is now free to think and be creative. Doors that were shut, suddenly open wide. Concepts that were too complicated to conceive, become crystal clear.
Not only will I teach you how to channel positive thinking into your everyday existence, I will point you in the direction of classes, books, and life lessons that will help you flourish.
When you erase the self-doubt, you build the ladder to self-confidence and success! It’s time to get busy. It’s time to Step Up to the Mic!
[Rodney, it is assumed that the Preface is written by the author.]

STEP UP TO THE MIC
HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
There are many voice-over books on the market that tell you how to make a demo, find an agent, market yourself, etc. This book tells you how to go about those activities—and more—in the right frame of mind.
Step Up to the Mic is an uplifting handbook, for both the novice and the seasoned pro, as you go about your daily job of trying to be successful in the voice-over business.
The information in these pages will aid you emotionally, spiritually, and physically every day. The positive affirmations and exercises will provide you with the ammunition you need to deal with your employers, competition, and colleagues.
You should study the concepts weekly—if not daily—until they become a part of your life, fabric, and philosophy. Keep this book with you at all times and refer to it in job situations when you need a reminder of the positive power that you possess inside.
Do the positive exercises for at least ten minutes a day when needed, and watch your goals become realities in a relatively short period of time. This is not a book to be read and put away. You should read it over and over again. Refer to it not only in tough times, but also in good times, to make a positive thing even better.
