Authors Thoughts About this book
The day it finally dawned on me that the human voice is an incredibly powerful ball of pure energy spewing out of the mouth and enveloping everything within its range of sound is the day I stopped being angry and disappointed in its inadequacies. Up until that time I had always believed that it was, My voice and it just wasn’t doing what I wanted it to do.
Period.
I kept punishing my voice for disappointing me by tightening, forcing and strangling it. In my ignorance of the truth, I believed I could make it perform by pushing it harder and forcing it to be louder so people would hear me.
The frustrating part of all that pushing was my voice would simply say, Enough is enough!
and shut down on me. I was the one who was reaping the wrath of my own vengeance, not my voice. It would simply take a mini-vacation away from me while I was forced to cancel engagements because I had no voice. How stupid could I be!
Why it took me so long to get it I don’t know. The voice has always been the focal point of my work and my joy in life and it wasn’t until I began to teach voice that I realized I was not alone in my frustrations over it.
That small nugget of enlightenment opened the door to vocal discovery and let me peek at the human voice in all of its glory without my angers and judgments standing in the way. With an unsteady gait, I stepped through that door to begin my own journey into the fascinating world of the human voice.
The Studio Womb
My studio is like the womb: small with low ceilings and it feels like a very safe place to be. To begin to release that pent-up ball of vocal energy, there must be a safe place to let it out even if it’s your car with all the windows up. To be effective, the vocal energy must be free to express itself. The amount of voice power we are all holding back is enormous. I have seen vocal miracles occur in very shy, soft-spoken people of all ages when they are given the right to let their voice be heard.
Freeing that vocal energy has amazing powers. No matter how tired a man may be from his stress-filled day, or how pressed a student may feel from the rigors of homework and academic pressure, by the time the hour we spend together is over, they are ready to take on the world again. Vocal sound is not only energizing, it’s healing. Many of my female students come in drained and leave feeling healthy and alive again. So what is this energy and where does it come from?
Vocal energy is not only powerful, it’s accessible, but also to use it correctly, skills are a must and understanding how the voice actually works is vital. This book is written to teach you, the reader, the vocal skills you will need to be successful in business. This book also shows you how to use the voice to create the perfect vocal image to deliver your message. All of the wisdom and understanding you will gain here will help you to remove the blocks and free up that mighty vocal energy that screams to be heard.
The principle behind The 3-Dimensional Business Voice is to get people to hear what you say and do what you tell them to do. You will learn to harvest your vocal energy the way you would harvest any treasure planted in your garden. It all starts with a seed of desire to change your vocal patterns.
It must then be nurtured by the knowledge of how the voice works. You must water it by studying the text and doing the exercises. (The exercises are all easy and fun to do so don't get nervous.) When it’s time to pick that ripe to perfection
voice from the garden, you will then wash off the residue of mistaken beliefs about the human voice and place it on a shiny new plate for everyone to enjoy. What a feast for your listeners' ears when you open your mouth to speak and sing!
Chapter 1
Can We Talk?
Picture this:
It's the most important day of your life! Your boss has asked you, the new kid on the block, to pitch the company’s wealthy new client. Wow! Finally you have been given a chance to show everyone your stuff.
You have rehearsed your presentation in front of your spouse, your kids, the neighbor’s dog and every eye-level inanimate object standing in your living room and Boy, are you ready!
(Cut to the conference room.)
Seated at your right is your boss and on your left, it’s Mr.
Mega-bucks himself. Spread out on the table in front of you is the vehicle you have crafted to spin you to the top of the promotion ladder: Your perfect presentation.
With a respectful nod to your boss who has just given you an incredible introduction, you take a deep breath, smile a confident smile, open your mouth and go for it!
Good morning Mr. Cooper. You have in front of you my company’s proposal with all the facts, figures and projections for marketing your product over the next two years. I’m sure you will be as excited as we are at the bottom line figures and the overall marketing plan.
FREEZE
With your face frozen in a Cheshire cat smile, you listen with horror as the words come spewing out of your mouth like a freight train screeching down the track at 120 miles an hour. Your eyes dart back and forth from your boss to the client, as you desperately search for an answer; Oh dear God. What’s happening to my voice? I sound like Minnie Mouse on helium.
It's Time For A Vocal Reality Check
Many a successful career has been stopped dead in its tracks by an uncontrolled voice kicking into high gear at the worst possible moment. Anyone who has been there and done that will agree, even the brightest presentations pale when wrapped in a weak, unprofessional vocal delivery.
What people don’t realize is that vocal skills are just that, skills! The voice, like many other aspects of our human nature, is a learned response. In the beginning we learn to speak by imitating those around us. We all have the same basic vocal mechanism. Although the voice parts may come in different sizes, the actual working mechanism is identical.
Too many people go through their entire lives being unhappy with the sound of their voice, yet they will do absolutely nothing to improve
it. With a shrug of the shoulders they hopelessly declare, I’m stuck with the voice I was handed and that’s that!
Although many people feel vocally impaired they do nothing to un-impair
it. The main reason is, most people don’t even know it can be fixed How sad for them!
Low Voice Alert!
Today, more than ever, singers, speakers and business professionals who use the voice excessively are experiencing vocal weakness and voice blowouts. This can spell disaster in the business and entertainment worlds. It is so competitive out there that every little edge we lose pulls us further away from our success.
Thousands of dollars are spent on motivational seminars, self-help books, headshots, wardrobe, personal success coaches and even plastic surgery to create that perfect image. But when it comes to improving the vocal image, most people think all you have to do is lower the pitch of the voice and people will listen.
It’s very common for voice problems to exist in anyone who creates that false, (and yes, it is a false) lower voice sound. Younger men thrust into authoritative roles who must give orders to employees older and wiser than they, are have a great deal of trouble sustaining that strong, Voice of command, vocal sound.
After a few hours of forcing the voice to talk in a lower tone, it gets tired and gives out. This is also true of women who lower their voices to sound more authoritative in a competitive male business environment. That may offend you ladies, but oh how true it is.
Let’s face it, no one likes to take orders from a whiny, high pitched voice, male or female. This becomes a big problem also for salespeople lowering their voices to sound sincere so we will trust them and buy everything they are selling. Lawyers lower the voice to sound more convincing to the jury. Teachers, speakers, executives, media people, you can add them all to the long list of excessive users and abusers of the lowered voice sound.
Here’s Lookin’ At You, Kid!
Voice problems that are coming from lowering the pitch incorrectly are so prevalent that professional voice therapists have given them a name. They are all lumped together and affectionately called the Bogart-Bacall Syndrome. Anyone who has seen the movie Casablanca with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall (and who hasn’t no matter what your age may be .) will agree, these are two very fine lower voices, both male and female. The problem is, after a day imitating Boggie and Lauren, the voice gets a bad case of vocal strain
The symptoms of this BB Syndrome, (as it is referred to,) are:
Vocal fatigue
Soreness and pain in the throat area
•Chronic hoarseness
Sound familiar? If so, you belong to 68% of the work force experiencing some form of voice problems. The sad part of all is, people who are trying desperately to lower their voices for a more authoritative, worldly and sophisticated sounds have no idea of the damage they are doing to their vocal cords.
The 3-Dimensional Answer
This book is dedicated to the enjoyable task of teaching the working professional and everyday voice user how to achieve that voice of authority without destroying precious voice parts in the process.
On Night Line (The late night news program on ABC, they dedicated an entire show to a female talk show host from Washington DC, who completely lost the use of her voice to Spasmodic Dysphonia (paralyzed vocal cords.) Imagine, a talk show host with no voice.
Julie Andrews is another example of a ruined career due to voice misuse, abuse and bad surgery. Mary Poppins lost her voice for heaven’s sake! This is serious stuff!! Even California, Governor Pete Wilson withdrew from a presidential election because of vocal surgery that left his voice raspy and weak. And the English Pop singer Adel cancelled all of her concerts and had surgery to correct her voice problems. Oh, what to do? What to do?
Not only is vocal technique necessary to avoid the pitfalls of a dysfunctional voice, it is also necessary in gaining control over the vocal mechanism to create a more pleasing and enduring vocal sound. In this book that treasured sound is called: The Voice of Command or How to get people to hear what you say and do what you tell them to do!
Isn’t that what we all want? To have people hear and acknowledge what we have said and believe in us enough to do what we tell (or politely suggest) they do.
The Proper Answer to Chronic Voice Problems is NOT Surgery, it's Good Vocal Technique.
This is a goal worth the effort it takes to change a lifetime of mis-information and bad vocal habits. I’m not talking about practicing two hours a day for years to achieve this vocal prize. In the first place, you already have a voice,
