1. Jump Girl!

The smooth rock felt warm under Dani's bare feet. It was late summer and only a whisper of cool breeze hinted at Autumn.

Quit stalling and jump. Judy stage-whispered behind her.

A giant boulder left by retreating glaciers about ten thousand years ago, loomed over the gentle bend in Turkey Creek. To her right, the water-worn flat rocks of the slide rapids burbled cheerily. To her left, the overhanging trees shaded the gentle bend. Straight ahead was the only spot deep enough to jump.

Just hold your horses. Jerry is too close. I don't want to land on him. It was a stall and she knew it, but it gave her an extra few seconds while Judy leaned forward and peeked over her shoulder.

Bullshit! He's a mile away. Just jump already.

She did.

Her toes almost immediately touched the muddy bottom and she kicked up, sputtering and shaking the water from her hair. The drop was only about ten foot and if you got caught by the Ranger, you would be kicked out of the Preserve. That didn't stop most of the kids from trying it at least once. They were all smart enough not to dive in because several people had been critically injured in the past. It just wasn't deep enough.

She had barely moved out of the landing zone when Judy splashed down.

Idiot! She slapped her friend on the shoulder when she surfaced. You almost landed on me.

Shhhsss. Didn't you hear Mike's whistle? The Ranger is coming.

The two of them swam away from the tall rock and pretended to have just finished the slide.

Hey! The official-sounding voice came from the bank, below the rock. You two. The young fellow in the uniform was pointing at the girls. Come here, now.
