    There's No Place - Tracey H. Kitts

    Chapter One

Kate stood there for a moment, unsure of how to react.

If you only knew how many naked werewolves I’ve encountered at this lake recently, she joked.

A tall, naked man stood a few feet away from her, and he looked horrified.

How do you know that I’m a werewolf?

If you woke up in a shallow grave down there, she said, pointing, then you must be the werewolf we buried.

He still looked confused. He tried to run a hand through his long dark hair and staggered.

Kate reached to help him, then pulled back. After all, he did attack Gerry and threaten her as well.

    "You buried me?"

His knees nearly gave way completely this time and against her better judgment, Kate closed the distance between them.

He put one arm around her shoulders as he said, Thank you.

Are you telling me you don’t remember anything? she asked him.

He shook his head and immediately looked like he regretted doing so. There was a jagged pink line across his throat where Gerry had torn it out. His impressive physique was decorated with many pale scars that had faded almost completely.

You said your name was Jeffrey Moore?

Yes, he said, his voice sounding weaker. "And you say you buried me?"

Well, not alone. Gerry did most of the work. Come on, I’ll help you inside, I can’t just leave you out here.

    Thank you, he repeated.

Kate wasn’t sure why she would trust him now, but she did. Something about Jeff clearly said he was not trying to hurt anyone. In fact, she was confused as to why he attacked them to begin with.

Jeffrey paused as she opened the door. I’ve got dirt on me still, he said.

You can use the downstairs shower.

He raised one dark brow. You say that you helped to bury me in the woods, but you are willing to help me? How about we sit here on the deck and you refresh my memory on exactly what the hell I did to deserve to be tossed in a shallow grave? Then, I would love to use your shower, if the offer still stands.

"You can barely stand, and you’re naked. At least let me get you a towel."

It’s dawn, he said, looking around. Who else will see me out here in the middle of nowhere? Unless my nudity offends you. He made the last sound like a question.

I’ve never been less offended. But you’d be surprised how many visitors we get. Luckily, my aunt is probably at the market by now, getting supplies for her restaurant.

She helped him to a chair and left to grab a towel. Kate had no explanation as to why she would feel safe enough to be alone with him, but she did. What the hell was going on here?

    Chapter Two

For a moment she wondered how to begin telling Jeff about last night. Then she realized, he did not need to know everything. After all, he was a stranger and this shit was complicated.

I was down by the lake with my friend Gerry. He’s also a werewolf.

She left out the fact that they appeared to be getting back together. That is, based on the hot sex they had and the fact that he returned later that night (the night they buried Jeff) to tell her he would soon end things with his fiancée, Melissa.

And how did I get here? Jeff asked.

You attacked us. I’m not sure if you drove, ran, or took a taxi. All I know about that part is you showed up and tried to kill us.

He looked surprised. "Did I say why?"

You said that Gerry was in your territory, that you were going to kill him and then tear my guts out.

Jesus Christ. I take it I lost this fight?

Yes. Your throat was torn out.

He put a hand to his throat and traced a finger over the scar. According to what Kate had read about werewolves, even the scar would fade soon.

It’s a miracle I’m still alive. How long ago was this?

That was about twenty-four or thirty-six hours ago, roughly.

He shook his head again. I’m so sorry. I have no explanation as to why I would have attacked you or your friend. I assure you, I have no intention of trying to harm you or anyone else. I have no memory of this place before I woke up in that grave. I mean, I know who I am, where I live, things like that. But I don’t ever remember being here. He paused and seemed to look closely at her for the first time. Don’t I know you?

Kate smiled. You might have seen me. I’m Kate Wallace.

He grinned broadly, looking more wolfish by the second. You’re the one who played the werewolf hunter in all those movies. He laughed. And did you say you are dating a werewolf?

Well, I’m not exactly sure I’d call it dating.

He raised an eyebrow. The way you called him your ‘friend’ says you’ve got something going on.

Will anyone be looking for you? Your pack maybe? she asked, avoiding the subject.

I’m the alpha; they wouldn’t look for me for a while. They assume I can take care of myself. He laughed bitterly. Apparently, I’m not much of an alpha.

I wouldn’t be too hard on yourself. Clearly something is off here.

If I didn’t know better, I’d say I was being influenced by magic.

It’s strange that you would go there. Several people have mentioned magic to me recently.

    Do you know any witches?

Kate shook her head. If I do, they haven’t come out about it.

He leaned forward conspiratorially. Does anyone hate you?

    You want a list?

While Jeffrey showered, Kate called Rebecca. If Kate had to guess, she’d say that Becca had stayed up late the night before working on her next book. Rebecca was a bestselling novelist. Kate devoured everything she wrote, and not just because she was her best friend.

    Get your ass over here!

Dude. It’s barely past daybreak. What the fuck?

You remember that werewolf we helped bury? Well, he’s in my shower right now.

Why the hell would you put a dead werewolf in your shower? That’s so gross!

    He’s not dead.

    Chapter Three

Rebecca was passed out drunk on the other side of the lake while Kate and Gerry had sex that night. She missed that, and Jeffrey’s arrival. She did not, however, miss his brutal death (or so they thought) and burial.

Now, as he sat at the kitchen table, all she could do was stare at him. Kate couldn’t blame her, even if the circumstances weren’t bizarre, he was gorgeous and that towel didn’t hide much.

Are you telling me that you wouldn’t be upset at another alpha being in your territory? Rebecca asked.

I would find out why he was here. I wouldn’t just attack him.

Well, Gerry was turned six years ago. He was gone for four of those years and has only been back in the area for two. It makes sense that if you don’t live in town, you might not have known about him. He has kept a pretty low profile since he was turned.

I only moved here two years ago, he said. I’ve been busy establishing my business. The whole alpha thing sort of landed in my lap.

What sort of business are you in? Kate asked.

I run a custom motorcycle shop, about an hour from here. Speaking of which, could one of you ladies give me a lift? I seem to be without my license. He looked down at his body. And my clothes.

Both women laughed despite the circumstances.

"Now that I think more about it, I do remember getting a strange text, Jeffrey said. As a matter of fact, it is the last thing I remember before waking up in the woods this morning. It said something about another alpha being in my territory uninvited. I remember thinking it was weird and that I didn’t know the number. Oh, it also said to not text back to that number."

Kate grabbed a notepad from her aunt’s recipe stack and jotted down her number.

When you find that text, send me the number it came from.

Of course. Let me know what you find out. I don’t appreciate being used to attack innocent people. I can’t apologize enough.

I’m just glad you aren’t really crazy, and you weren’t killed, Kate said.

    Me too, he agreed.

As soon as Becca left to drive Jeff home Kate called Gerry.

    Chapter Four

Ever since Gerry checked the mail, all he could do was stare at that damn necklace. His fiancée, Melissa, was in Hawaii for her sister’s wedding and a family reunion. Why on earth would she take the time to send him this delicate little seashell necklace? The note said it reminded her of him.

He never expected to get back with Kate. When she left him six years ago, he thought he would never see her again, unless he was watching one of the action movies that made her famous. Ironically her best known role was that of a werewolf hunter.

But now she was back. She broke things off with the actor she’d left with, Jacob Warner, and she was still in love with Gerry.

That’s what’s important, Gerry said to himself. Why am I sitting here with this stupid necklace?

Last night he had everything worked out. He told Kate his plans. The decision had been made! As soon as Melissa got back he was ending their engagement. He didn’t want to hurt her, but he didn’t love her either. He wanted to be with Kate, he always had.

And yet he felt compelled to put on that fucking necklace.

    *****

Even all those miles away, Melissa felt it when Gerry finally gave in. She enchanted that necklace with every bit of dark magic she had at her disposal. That damn wolfman would be hers, one way or another. She hadn’t worked so hard for all these years just to give up now.

She would have him, even if it meant killing Kate Wallace to get him.

She took a deep breath and ordered another margarita.

    Chapter Five

Kate was still in bed the next morning when Rebecca came knocking on her bedroom door. At first she pulled the covers over her head, hoping that whoever was there would give up and go away.

Come on, the day’s a wastin’.

Go away, Kate moaned, pulling the pillow over her head as well.

What are you, hung-over? Rebecca said, pushing the door open despite Kate’s protests.

I’m not hung-over, but it’s, she rolled to look at the clock. Shit, Becca. It’s eight o’clock.

What did Gerry have to say when you told him what happened with Jeff?

Nothing. I haven’t been able to reach him. It’s strange. He’s not answering my calls.

He always participates in the local rodeo. Maybe he’s just busy? Besides, it’s not as if he expected the guy to rise from the dead. You didn’t leave that on a message, did you?

    God, no.

You know, now that we know he’s not crazy, that werewolf Jeffrey is kind of hot.

Rebecca walked over and Kate hated how good she looked so early. She was wearing a pair of denim Capri pants with a short pink top. She looked positively cute, with her matching sandals and perfectly placed hair.

I hate you, Kate said, but a smile was already forming on her lips.

Have you forgotten what today is? Rebecca asked as she sat on the side of Kate’s bed. There are sales to be had, and the parade starts at ten o’clock.

Kate had completely forgotten the rodeo parade. She’d also been gone long enough to forget that every store within a twenty mile radius had a sale to celebrate the weekend long rodeo.

Do you think Gerry will be there? she asked as she threw back the covers.

    At the parade? Probably. Why?

No, I meant the rodeo, Kate said.

As she walked toward the bathroom Rebecca answered, I think he owns several of the bulls and horses that are supposed to be in the competition.

Kate thought that over for a moment and said, Will you pick out something for me to wear while I take a quick shower?

She decided not to wash her hair again, since she’d washed it the night before, and it would take at least an hour to dry. Instead she plugged in her curling iron while she dried off, deciding that
