About this ebook

Approaching middle age in a human lifetime of experience, Sev coded as spirit Orion Ang0157, had been assigned to the third rock out from a star in the Orion arm of the Milky Way. Adamantly petitioning release from duty, with a deeply felt longing for home, he’s required to participate in a mission evaluation. Reviewing the human evolutionary track, his long list of grievances and the species’ current status, he finds little hope—he simply wants to drop the file. Having petitioned the looming climate challenge as an opportunity to evolve towards global cooperation, Sev finds himself blindsided by peoples’ non-response to biosphere care. Remembering he proposed the challenge out of youthful idealism, he now feels overwhelming responsibility, seeing that request as a total mistake. When the supervisor asks for further ideas, citing a petition from Upper Floor, he struggles but blurts out his list of everything from a new religion to a charismatic climate hero. As Upper Floor considers the options Sev must decide on whether to give humanity more time to act.

    The Request

He held his hand to his code tag, mind recall percolating through his existence in human form. A spiritual being having a human experience he’d heard on the planet, though rarely. Roused from a blank inward stare, he focused his eyes when the voice behind the desk spoke. Standing on a bridge between nothing and tomorrow, he steadied his resolve.

You are requesting an assignment termination. The galaxy supervisor peered over scanner specs. Once again.

Yes, he said, determined, yet unable to hold in his misting eyes.

The beings in this dimension refer to linear time, the supervisor said. We’ll speak in those terms if that works.

    Sure.

This administrator would be managing all missions in Spiral Arm OHO44, locally known as the Orion Arm of the Milky Way galaxy. Tasks such as reviewing any updates, progress reports and modification petitions. A petition to abort an assignment, such as his, needed clearance at this level before final decision.

The request states you feel a longing.

Yes. He shuffled in the chair. For home.

You carry an evaluation assignment, the supervisor said. In the realm of sentient beings who seek out and believe in angels. You are scheduled for at least two more decades in local linear time.

Home, he repeated under his breath. I just wanna come home.

Another assignment might work, he said. Any place better than this. I did check off the transfer box.

A review, then, the supervisor said. We’ll need the latest.
