Ethan said as he stepped back to admire his handiwork. He nodded before he looked at his coworker. Sal?
Sal looked up from his phone before glancing at the window display. Yes,
he said. Good job.
Ethan rolled his eyes. I kind of feel like you don’t mean it.
It’s a window display, dude,
Sal replied. I mean, I guess you’ve done a good job. It’s not that hard.
You do it next time, then,
Ethan said, crossing his arms over his chest.
Look, I’m sorry,
Sal said, putting his phone in his pocket. I think this job is just, y’know, getting to me.
Yeah, well, unlike you,
Ethan replied, arms still crossed. I take pride in my work.
Sal raised his eyebrows. He didn’t want to tell Ethan that he didn’t think this was work to take pride in — it was just a window display in a small boutique in Small Town, Nowhere, USA — because he knew that it was probably the only thing that made Ethan happy lately.
After everything that had happened the last few weeks.
He had a look at the display this time. Closely.
Ethan’s taste was, as always, impeccable. The quarter room, all soft reds and yellow accents, had clothes placed around as if they belonged to a fashionable woman with expensive taste. One that lived somewhere way cooler than where they were.
Sal looked at Ethan and smiled. It’s really good. I’m sorry I was a dick.
Ethan shrugged. It’s okay. I know that nobody cares about this, I just—
Sal put his hand on Ethan’s shoulder. That’s not true. I care. I promise I care.
I don’t believe you,
Ethan replied, though his smile betrayed him.
If we ever got any foot traffic, people would be pouring in,
Sal said. I promise.
Ethan nodded before sighing. He walked back into the boutique before Sal did. They sat down at the counter, one
