As I drowned in the haze of the half-lit static theatrics of Pendulum I felt sick. The sharp rocks of the parking lot under my feet wouldn’t absorb my puke, I thought. I didn’t like thinking of it, so I swallowed my anxiety down against the reflexes of my throat that wanted to make it all worse.

The secondhand smoke brought me further into the here and now. The coils of heat coming from their mouths, rising to meet the moon, which loomed gently above us as a proud crescent. I tore my eyes from the horror house and watched my friends smoke their nerves away.

I was only there because of Mara. A month ago, my best friend declared the need for a sexual intervention for me. Twenty-one and never had dick. That’s how she put it. As Mara went on about how important it was to wake up and figure out what I liked and didn’t like while I’m young—and other elements of my life that were none of her damn business—I couldn’t help but fume. It was all bullshit.

I didn’t want anyone right now—I didn’t need anyone right now. But Mara had never been without a boyfriend, not since she was twelve. There was always a boy that gave into her grabby, pushy hands.

Anything I said wasn’t heard and in the end, I was the one left hurt and enraged.

The raw end of a chill caught my spine and for once I wished I smoked like the rest of them. Lost in my thoughts,
