Preface
In today’s world, the digital economy has emerged as an unstoppable giant that’s growing at 10 percent a year – more than triple the rate of overall global economic growth. The Telecommunication Industry is also seeing an unprecedented push for a major transition towards a digital era.
Recently when I was discussing ‘digital’ in one of the workshops arranged with a leading telco, I experienced a very strange yet logical conversation with CXOs about defining what digital meant to them. Strange because everyone had a different definition or I should say ‘expectations’ but logical because none of them were incorrect. For CMO, Digital means, having a digital shopping mall and real time decision through which he can push products and services. For Sales Head, it was more of organizing channels and Dealer management. Customer Service Head was focusing on how to improve customer experience. CIO was thinking only from the technology perspective and ‘workarounds’. All of them knew what as an individual they want or rather desire, but they all lacked alignment and common vision about where the business needs to go. This compelled me to think why the term ‘digital’ is being considered as a stuff which everyone is rushing to get. Everyone wants to go digital but are we really sure what to do with this - ‘digital’ stuff. Your guess is as good as mine.
What kind of business model should be targeted for your digital ambition? What are the drivers behind these changes? How can you measure the digital maturity? What is happening around you in the digital space? These are some of the topics which the author has tried to capture in this handbook in simplest possible way. To keep the digital roadmap SIMPLE, there are some guidelines and suggestions which can be followed and this handbook makes a sincere effort to share some approaches based on real life experiences without going much into jargons and abstractions. This handbook also contains some industry information on other digital topics and references to few external viewpoints. The emphasis is made on thinking simply yet significant when you go for the digital transformation with practical & achievable goals
