About this ebook

A slow beginning to a complex song

By Ben McFadden

But the truth is, they could not rescue me,
Just like the truth is, I cannot rescue you.

My indifference at the time, it may have seemed cruel,
But you’re the one who told me just how cold I could be.

Clean White Bed, performed by The Smoke and Benjamin, lyrics written by Tracy Snow.

But the truth is, they could not rescue me,

Just like the truth is, I cannot rescue you.

My indifference at the time, it may have seemed cruel,

    1  You were there, again

I put out the call and you arrived.

Some of the things you said confused me.

Even after all of these years,

You still don’t seem to know how my mind works.

    I can’t hardly remember yesterday

But the rest of my life before that

Is like a map I can read

Tracing my finger down the winding streets.

The last time we were here three of us left together.

Even if you plan a coincidental event

When it happens it may still take you by surprise.

But she went away, and I went away

And I haven’t even spoken to you in years.

Don’t you see how those memories are etched on the walls?

Our footprints are still on the ceiling

And the cell-dust of our flesh is still on the floor.

    I’m looking in the mirror

    And I hardly recognize myself.

But you claim I haven’t changed a bit.

There’s some kid out there somewhere

Asking the same questions we used to.

He’s probably just as fucked up as we used to be.

And I bet he doesn’t forget it.

    Have you?

Don’t you remember the broken lamp on the floor

That I accidentally shattered, when I lost my temper

Because I had no way to ever stop you from crying?

Things like that you don’t forget.

Now I’m standing by the gas pump

    And I’m lighting a cigarette.

    You’re right, I haven’t changed a bit.

    2  I was there, again

No, shit.  I went back to that same place

Where lovers don’t relate and the bartender never knows anyones name.

Love you so much it makes me sick

    Kurt says.

Why is love painful?  Maybe it’s because

Of our unwise choices and misconceptions

    About whom this other
