    CHAPTER 1 – HISTORY HOMEWORK

    My legs were trembling. My palms were sweaty. The Mystery Math Squad had never faced anything quite so frightening or terrifying.

    No, we weren’t on some top secret assignment… we had History homework.

    Now, most kids in our class get in a tizz when they’re faced with mathematics challenges. But not us. You could fire a hundred math questions at us and we’d answer them with our eyes closed. But History homework was a whole other thing. We were math geniuses, not historians!

    The other problem was that all the other kids in class had their weekends to do their assignments. But not us four. We were different. We had responsibilities. As soon as our weekend started, Trixie, Linus, Devon and I slipped into our secret identities. We became the Mystery Math Squad. And we had far more important things to do than homework!

    Trixie was the only one of us who was as good at every subject as we were at math, but even she was daunted by the amount of History homework we had to do. Our teacher had set us a project to research castles and create a scrapbook. We didn’t even know where to begin.

    We sat in our tree house, our MMS-HQ, in my back garden. On the floor of our headquarters, the empty scrap book lay open in the middle. Surrounding it was a pile of library books, printed pages from the internet, and glossy pictures cut out from magazines. But the whole thing was a huge disorganized pile.

    Right, Trixie said turning to me. Addie, you start by making a collage for the front cover. Use these pictures. She handed me a pile of photos and some glue. Find the best way to make them fit.

    I counted the pictures. There were 10. Trying to layout a few pictures, I worked out that I could fit 2 across and 3 down. A quick multiplication - 2 times 3 - told me that only 6 pictures would fit on the front. I got to work selecting the best 6.
