“When 1 enlisted Sept 1, 1864, I was 20 years old. Weighed 125 lbs., was small for my age. In fact thru my school years the boy's called me "Banty". I was 5 ft 8 inches tall, but in the great need of the government at that time, they were not inclined to be very particular, would accept anyone who could carry a gun. I would have enlisted sooner but for father’s illness, & subsequent paralysis. ...Lincoln had just called for 500,000 men & my towns quota was 40 men which would take nearly every available man, for it had answered several large calls before. Several of our citizens had fled to Canada to avoid the draft & they remained there till the close of the war.”Transcribed from the original documents of Sinclair Smith, “Memoirs of a Civil War Soldier” immerses you in the times and language—the family farm and early schools in Pennsylvania, enlisting during a “call” in 1864 at the age of 20, recovering from wounds in Washington at the end of the war, and life after returning home. Smith memoir exposes drunken officers, the hardships of war, and the battle for survival.Novice and expert alike will find the unedited writings of this Tioga County, Pennsylvania boy fascinating and insightful.

    CHAPTER 1

Questions, questions, questions, are all that I could hear. All I was seeing was the moon through the bubbling clouds glowing right through the picture window all over the floor. Hearing someone yell as I looked down I saw a bloody knife and a body. Flashbacks were running through my mind. Where were these people coming from? What was going on? Maybe this was a dream really bad one.

Suddenly, there was a man in a dark uniform before me.

Gretchen, Gretchen are you all right? The officer asked.

I don’t know, replied Gretchen. I seem to be in a bad hangover, but I don’t understand how I got one.

Well Gretchen, we have a bigger problem than your hangover. There’s a dead body lying here. Do you know anything about this body in your house? the officer asked.

No sir, I don’t! What’s this all about?

We got a phone call to come to 5482 Quarry Hill Dr. and check out a murder.

How did you get in here? she questions.

Well the door was wide open, I seen the body there so I and Officer Eugene Randell walked in.

I don’t know no more than you do, sir, Gretchen repeated. Could I have some coffee?

Do you know who I am Gretchen?

    Yes, you’re Sgt. Mike Clark.

Let’s go to the kitchen and get you some coffee. He said.

Gretchen, you must know something? Your hands and cloths are covered in blood and we need to get to the bottom of this. You got to come down to the police station and tell us what you know and we also need to take pictures.

I’ve got to take a shower, she said.

Not now Gretchen, we need pictures of you the way you look now.

    Did you know this man?

Do you know how he got into your house?

    No sir, I don’t.

We’ve got to go to the station now.

    Am I under arrest now?

    I’m afraid so, Gretchen.

I need to call a lawyer.

That’s okay you can do that.

You’ll probably be in for overnight, Gretchen.

Calling her lawyer Mr. Sawyer, he said he could be there in about an hour and a half. She yelled to the officer. Being transferred to the station where she was fingerprinted, booked and sat in the cell waiting for her lawyer. Okay Gretchen I’m here. Tell me what about last night? Her lawyer said.

Mr. David Sawyer was her lawyer whom had lived in the area all of Gretchen’s life. He was well-liked by everybody, and he totally took comfort in serving his local people. He was kind of a tall light haired gentleman probably weighed around hundred and seventy pounds. He had finished his high school dream of becoming a lawyer in his hometown which he did achieve. He was also on many of the boards in the town Council man equally important also one of the head men at the same church that Gretchen attended also.

All I remember is that I woke up and had a knife in my hand and a bloodied body beside me.

    What time was that?

Five o’clock this morning, when Sgt. Mike Clark and Officer Eugene Randell woke me up.

What were you doing? Where were you before that time? Start from six o’clock in the evening?

    What day is it?

It’s Thursday. Okay, I went out for a drink to see friends at the Crescent Stone Bar."

Continue, said Sawyer. Where did you go after that or did you stay?"

Hey, I don’t remember driving home, I can’t find my keys. Gretchen said, searching through her purse. That’s not like me! She said.

What do you mean not like you?

    "I
