Chapter One: Introduction
A Day No Pigs Would Die
by Robert Newton Peck was first published in 1972. It is a semi-autobiographical novel. It follows the life of Rob Peck, the central character, who is coming-of-age in rural Vermont. He lives on an impoverished farm there.
The book happens to be one of the first books to have been categorized as young adult novel. It is the author’s first published novel. In 1994, the author published its sequel A Part of the Sky.
The author was born and brought up in rural Vermont. His parents, Haven Peck and Lucile Domburgh Peck, were farmers. They had particular interest in the tenets of Shakerism.
He had fought in the World War II as a machine gunner in the infantry Division. When he came back home, he joined Rollins College in 1947. He graduated in 1953. He even joined law school, but never finished the courses.
Peck did several jobs during his adult life. He even worked in a paper mill, and killed hogs, as his father used to do. Eventually he became a scriptwriter for American Home Products.
A Day No Pigs Would Die
was an instant success. The book grossed around three hundred thousand dollars in its four months in bookstores. The author was approached by Twentieth Century Fox, for they wanted to make a movie on his story.
The novel has won several literary awards which include the Colorado Children’s Book Award. The novel is often recommended for further reading at schools and colleges. The libraries recommend it to their members around the world.
Chapter Two: Plot Overview
Rob Peck is the narrator of the story. He plays hockey from his school. He lives on an impoverished farm. When the children play hockey, the other children visit the mall, but Rob keeps wandering around a hill.
Once, while he is walking around, he sees a neighbour’s cow. It is giving birth to a calf. Rob helps the cow birth the calf. However, during the process of delivery, he is quite banged up.
Eventually, Mr. Tanner, his neighbour, carries him home. He is unconscious when they reach home. He is without his pants. There is a huge bloody gash on his arm.
Rob often skips school. His parents take care of their child. They are very religious, although they are very poor. They take the boy to his bed. Rob stays in bed for a week to fully recover. Mr. Tanner gives him a sweet little piglet as a present. Rob names that little pig Pinky.
As the time passes, the little piglet grows into a pig. Rob and Pinky have several adventures. Rob and Pinky watch the passing clouds in the sky, they run with a frog, and watch together a hawk kill a rabbit.
During the summer, Peck and his family have several interesting episodes with their neighbours. One day, Rob takes Pinky to the fair in a nearby Rutland. They go there with Mr. Tanner. At the fair, Rob is overwhelmed to see
