Franklin Delano Roosevelt - The Truth - Martin Squire

    INTRODUCTION

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the 32nd President of the United States. He was born on January 30th, 1882, and died on April 12th, 1945. He was a Democrat, and was elected to be president four times, serving his country from March 1933 up until his death in 1945.

Because of the time period during which he served, Franklin Delano Roosevelt played a critical role in the development of the United States during the 20th century. He served during a period of total war, and led the country through an economic depression that affected the whole world. He also brokered the New Deal domestic policies, which defined liberalism during the middle of the century.

    PERSONAL LIFE

The Roosevelts are one of the oldest families from New York, and, as a whole, the family has done some impressive things. Franklin D. Roosevelt's ancestors include wealthy trades people, as well as former militia members who served during the American Revolution. His family enjoyed some wealth, which can be attributed in part to the success of his maternal grandfather, Warren Delano, who traded in both tea and opium.

    The Early Years

Roosevelt's birthplace was the town of Hyde Park in the Hudson Valley, New York. His father was James Roosevelt I, and his mother was Sara Ann Delano. The pair were sixth cousins, and both came from old, wealthy New York families of primarily English descent, although Roosevelt’s paternal great-grandfather was of Dutch descent, and his mother's maiden name can be traced back to the immigration of the French in the 17th century.

Sara and James had planned to call their child Warren, but decided against doing so because Sara's nephew, who was also called Warren, had recently died. The couple decided to name their child Franklin, after Sara's uncle.

Roosevelt enjoyed a life of privilege. He was raised by a progressive mother and a father that had a parenting style that differed from the norm during that era. James was 54 when Franklin was born, and while some people considered him to be a rather remote father, more recent biographies of Roosevelt's life describe him as being relatively involved in the upbringing of his young son.

His mother described him as being more of a Delano than a Roosevelt, and he enjoyed the opportunity to travel frequently. Roosevelt took his first trip to Europe when he was two years old, and made several more trips before he was 15. While on those trips he learned basic German and French, and also acquired several other skills, including riding, golf, polo, lawn tennis and sailing.

    School Life

Roosevelt was educated at an Episcopal boarding school in Massachusetts called Groton School. Almost all of the students at this school were from elite families; the kind of old money that appears on the social register. The headmaster of the school, Endicott Peabody, placed a lot of value on the importance of public service and preached that it was a Christian's duty to help those who are less fortunate.  Peabody was a huge influence on Roosevelt, and the President spoke highly of him later
