    WHY PALM BEACH?

    What can you possibly say to answer that question? There’s simply no other town like Palm Beach in America. Off South Beach there’s Fisher Island, which they say is the richest ZIP Code in America. But Fisher Island is not a town. It’s an island enclave where the residents are as much prisoner as protected.

    There’s posh Indian Creek Island off Bal Harbour and Miami Beach, but there are only 32 homes on that island.

    No, Palm Beach is a real live, honest-to-god city, big enough to have a critical mass of residents so that you get the widest possible range of angels and lunatics. You have here what’s left of the old WASP society. Now, with lots of Big Money from Europe adding a bit more flash to the scene than the old-timers would like to see, the social scene is a little less refined and a bit more turbulent, but things move on at a Palm Beach pace. And nothing will change that. 

    The Madoff Scandal, of course, took a heavy toll, visiting upon the island a devastating hit that will last longer than any hurricane that struck, generations even, so
