Even at the most prestigious colleges the dorm rooms are virtual prison cells. Two small closets/storage space, two desktop counters in front of a fenced window overlooking the campus and two small cots with old springs that squawk with your every motion and a shared bathroom with showers at the end of the hall. My first week of school I didn’t mind the tight quarters so much as my assigned roommate was late to arrive. Secretly, I was hoping she never would. I enjoyed having the space to myself. And the alone time. There’s a lot a girl can do for herself when she has a little alone time.

After a very long first week of getting familiar with my surroundings and classmates and professors and myself, I returned to my room to be greeted by boxes stacked outside my door and a room transformed.
