Marriage on the Frontier - Joyce Carroll

    Marriage on the Frontier

Jane walked out onto the front porch of her small one-room home. She gazed up at the noon-day sun for a moment, warming her body against the chill of autumn, hands braced against her back. She’d forgotten to put her wrap around her blue cotton dress, but didn’t feel like returning for it. The sun and the long sleeves of her dress provided enough warmth for the moment.

It was Saturday, and she couldn’t decide what to do with herself. She’d already planned her lessons for the week ahead. Well, now, didn’t you hear? We’ve got a new little one in our home, and he and his momma are doing just fine. Joseph, he is, and with the way time flies, it won’t be too long before he’s up in that school of yours.

Oh, how lovely! Congratulations! You two let me know if you need anything. I’m happy to come over and help.

We may just take you up on that. Good day to you!

Jane continued wondering down the street, eating the biscuit slowly, until she came to the edge of town. It didn’t take very
