Chapter One
The curtain fell, and Camille sagged with exhaustion. She knew she should be grateful that so many people had travelled to the tiny opera house in Providence to see her, but the run had been too long and too challenging. The production of Turandot had been acclaimed as one of the most lavish and accomplished ever to be performed in the country, causing opera lovers from New York, Boston, Chicago and even further afield to flock to see it. Time and again the producers had extended the dates so they could reap their rewards. It had been the first time Camille had been lucky enough to secure a leading role, any role in truth. In the early weeks she had been excited, exhilarated even to be a part of a performance that was so well received. It had been her lifelong dream after all, hadn’t it? But as extension after extension had been made, and a two week run had become a six month one, she had begun to wish it was all over. Tonight it finally was.
She thrust the bouquet of roses she had been presented with as they took their final bows, yet another standing ovation and a full five curtain calls, at the stage manager and swept towards her cramped dressing room. She slammed the door behind her and sank gratefully onto the ratty chaise longue she had purloined from the props department. "Mademoiselle Germain, you were marvelous, as always, Miriam, her maid, said as she negotiated opening the door, squeezing through it whilst carrying a tray of warm but weak tea and a large tranche of chocolate cake. She kicked the door shut behind her, and grinned at her employer as she set the tray down.
You can finally enjoy a slice of cake." Camille stared at the cake hungrily. She had been watching her weight, ensuring she didn’t gain an ounce to make sure she could fit into her costumes, and had been careful about every morsel as she found that milk, cream, butter and cheese could make her voice scratchy and her breathing more difficult.
"Merci Miriam, you do not know how much I intend to enjoy it. They laughed together. Camille pushed herself up onto her feet wearily, and waited as Miriam unlaced her corset and assisted her out of her heavy costume. Clad in just her chemise, she picked up the teapot and poured herself a cup of tea, adding sugar and milk. She knew that few people would ever understand what a pleasure this was to her after so long drinking her tea with nothing but a slice of lemon. She picked up the fork and cut herself a large piece of the cake. She speared it gladly and brought it to her lips.
Ahh, she sighed.
C’est tres bon."
"Will you return to France Mademoiselle Camille?" Miriam asked her as she handed her a pot of cold cream to remove her makeup.
I don’t know,
Camille said sadly sitting down at the vanity mirror, removing the lid of the small pot. There seems to be little point in doing so. I do not have anybody there to go home to after all.
She began to apply the cream in thick layers to her face.
I could not live so far from my home,
Miriam said, admiration clear in her voice. I was born here in Providence, and I am sure I will probably die here too.
You do not want to travel at all? I would gladly keep you on as my maid if you wished to see more of the world. Though I currently do not have anywhere to go to, so you may be many months without any wages,
she admitted ruefully as she wiped off the cream and greasepaint with a succession of soft cloths.
I shall be here for the rest of my life, I wouldn’t dare be without my position,
Miriam admitted. You do not have another show lined up? Everyone else does.
Camille winced. It was true, but it didn’t make it hurt any less. Oh, I am so very sorry, I did not mean to offend.
"No, it is not your
