Fearless Felicity - Juliet Alva

Felicity Lane stood underneath the stern-looking red box of the fire alarm. It had a plastic window, covering a little handle which would set off the alarms for the entire school when pulled. The box was only a tiny thing, but it seemed huge right now.
Come on, Felicity,
moaned her classmate, Cassie Bennett. Don’t be a chicken!
Bok-bok bokaaaaw!
went Cassie’s friend, Sarah.
She won’t do it. She never does it!
added Zack, Cassie’s skater boyfriend. He was shaking his head and laughing.
They were Felicity’s friends... almost. They’d hung out together in elementary school, but since joining Oakvale Middle School less than a year ago, things were different. Cassie, always the prettiest with her long, blonde hair, had a group of friends around her all the time now. They were into stupid dares, like setting off the school fire alarm.
Felicity looked back at them, feeling her face turn red. Her stomach was turning, like it always did when she was scared. There were no teachers around... but what if they did see her? Or someone told? Or the fire department came out, then the cops got involved and they looked on the CCTV and they saw her and told her parents and arrested her and sent her to jail....
Whoa, breathe! She told herself. That’s crazy, that won’t happen... it’s just a silly prank...
Among Cassie and her friends was Cory Michaels, the best-looking boy in her entire year- he could have walked straight out of a jeans advert. Well, that was Felicity’s opinion, anyway. Cory was watching her, then he laughed at something Zack said. He shrugged and started messing with his phone.
Felicity felt rooted to the spot. She’d taken too long already. Now it was just weird. Should she pull it? Would it even matter? Why was this a big deal? She reached a hand towards the alarm, then changed her mind and pulled it back...
Brrrrrriiiing!
Felicity jumped back with a shock of fear, letting out a little shriek. A moment later, she realised that it was just the bell for the end of lunch break! But it was too late; the others were laughing at her.
Jeez, you’re jumpier than usual today!
remarked Cassie.
Saved by the bell,
replied Felicity with a shrug.
Cassie laughed and took Felicity by the arm, as the group walked together to their computer science class. The matter of the failed dare was dropped in favour of a conversation about what was on TV last night, but Felicity still felt ashamed. She wasn’t cut out for taking risks- never had been. She got scared easily and hated the way it made her stomach turn.
They each took seats by their computers. Sarah fussed over Cassie’s new jacket, never missing a chance to kiss up to the leader of the pack. Felicity looked at herself in her monitor’s black reflection, seeing a girl with boring mid-length brown hair (she was scared to dye it or cut it) and freckles. She liked her bright blue eyes, but she never wore anything to compliment them. She was just musing on what she could try, when the computer finished booting up and her reflection disappeared. A moment later, Mr. Williams entered the room.
Good afternoon, class. Systems on, eyes front!
began Mr. Williams.
Most of the kids thought Mr. Williams was creepy, but Felicity liked him. He had a mousey look, with thick glasses and thin shoulders. He was always moving
