About this ebook
SHORT STORY 7800 WORDS
Every year, it's Halloween tradition for Oliver to help little brother, Billy, create the most spectacular gore-filled, blood-soaked, frightening costume for Trick-or-Treating. Oliver is an Honor Roll science nerd and Billy is always amazed at what Big Ollie helps him create! He's always the hit of the evening and the talk of the school the next day!
This year, a girl enters the picture: Justine. She's beautiful, smart and actually likes Oliver!
The annual science fair is the weekend right before Halloween and Oliver just has to impress Justine! He's been working on a real artificially intelligent automaton with true AI capabilities; a feat no one has yet to accomplish. He works all weekend and there's just no time left to for tradition.
An unlikely source helps little Billy this year and the outcome is one that no one predicted... And it isn't pretty.
A true tale of misunderstood love.

Mischief Night, A Short Story - Dean Kutzler
Oliver sat in the classroom, resting his head in his hands, wiggling the horn-rimmed glasses up and down his nose like Groucho Marx as he contemplated a solution to his problem. The Sandra J. Jackson Middle School Science Fair was on Monday, and he had no clue what he was going to make. Expectations were high, not only because he was at the top of his class, nor because of the fact that he’d placed first in last year’s Science Fair with his amazing flashlight¹ that ran solely on hand heat, no, it was because of that girl in homeroom…the one with the long, golden hair and intelligent, crystal-blue eyes. She had asked if he was entering the science fair again this year.
Ah, Justine…
Justine was different from the rest of the girls at school. Oh—she was beautiful in every aspect and the most popular amongst the populars. But where the popular girls were mostly stuck-up and mean, she was kind and caring. The din of high school drama hadn’t entrapped her personality with immaturity like most, waiting to be freed in midlife, maybe. No—she was real and true to heart, which was a rarity for kids, especially pretty girls. They always walked past him like he was invisible, but not Justine. She saw through his nerdy awkwardness and valued him for his potential, but more importantly, she valued him for who he was.
The last bell of the day rang and it was Friday. Only the weekend left for Oliver to work on his project before the fair on Monday, which also happened to be Halloween. He remained seated as students filed past his desk, out of the classroom and into Weekend World. He was waiting for Justine to pack up her books so he could casually ask to walk her home, especially since it was on his way.
He wasn’t foolish.
Just because she was nice to him didn’t mean she liked him, but he’d never find out walking home alone. If she said yes, the plan was to ask her to go Trick-or-Treating with him and his little brother, Billy, after the fair.
What girl could resist a cute little kid brother in costume?
